In Henderson Texas farmer Vv. S. Peash reports cotton sold early brought $100 a bale, with potential gains if held longer. Peanuts fetch about $1.85 a bushel, cane syrup yields 20 gallons per acre at 75 cents a gallon, and oil wells could spark activity if finds occur.
C H Everett of the Wisconsin Agriculturist visits the Ski Hi orchard owned by A K Bassett near Sauk City. He notes frost proof cellars filled with apples, a 1000 barrel yield, prices from 3.00 to 6.00 per barrel, and efficient picking methods. Mrs Bassett’s role is to be detailed in a future installment.
A verdict of $600 was rendered against Lawrence Hettinger, a youthful auto driver, for causing damage when his vehicle collided with a car owned by Conrad Mohr at Portage.
Herman Krueger a railroad section hand from Reedsburg was arrested in Winfield by Constables Schieden and Mattice on Mayor Quimby’s charge of transporting moonshine. He pled guilty before Judge Hager and serves 130 days in Baraboo county jail. His car will be sold under Severson law provisions.
The B. B. Club met at Mrs. Albert Keepp home with Mrs. Oscar Noriie as hostess a new president and secretary were elected and a birthday party was planned The group agreed to hold a parcel shower at Mrs A L Farnsworth home on Dec 26 Refreshments were served and attendees enjoyed the gathering Miss Nettie Hopkins was absent due to illness
The Portage women’s relief group hosted a banquet honoring Dr Johnson and his wife. Dr Johnson, a local eye specialist, frequently visits Baraboo for medical work and is a well known figure in the region.
The Sauk County Country Life Association met at the Baptist church with opening remarks by Earl Thomas and talks by George McGilvra and Fred Cranefield on cooperation and horticulture. Sessions discussed radio markets, mental hygiene, juvenile court work, and child welfare. Miss Ann Logan spoke on the undernourished child.
The Catholic Women’s club met at K C hall on Wednesday with good attendance. Mrs Paul Miller read a paper on The Stage and the Catholic Church noting dramatics’ ties to culture and history, from Spain to Oberammergau, and US drama origins. The next meeting is Wednesday December 20 with Miss Connors Madison State Pres. of Catholic Women’s Clubs to attend.
In Old Bailey a jury convicts Edith Thompson and Frederick Bywaters of murdering Thompson’s husband. Thompson confesses to attempting to weaken him with ground glass. both are sentenced to death and await execution. Thompson faints and Bywaters protests his innocence as the judge imposes the death penalty.
The world’s largest candle, weighing a ton and 16 feet tall, designed to burn on All Saints Day for 18 centuries in memory of Enrico Caruso, is prepared for shipment to Italy.
