Tragic Drowning At Mendota Lake Wakes City

Miss Maurine Converse 32, formerly of Baraboo, drowned at Mendota Beach after stepping from a ledge into a deep dredged hole near a Hull family cottage. Sister Miss Mary Converse and Grant M. Hyde survived near misses. Hyde dislocated a shoulder while aiding others. Rescue crews, pulmoter work, and coroner were involved. body recovered about 30 minutes later.

Stolen Buick Recovered As Youths Arrested In Wisconsin

A six cylinder Buick owned by John Youngman was stolen from a Sparta garage during the night. The car was tracked to Tomah where Dan Crowley and Arthur Abrahamson were arrested and jailed after Sheriff Ross and Youngman retrieved the vehicle. A whiskey bottle lay outside the garage near Mendota Beach as the scene unfolded.

Case sent to county board over hunting license fees

Sauk County case with County Clerk S H Wood concerns the retention of about 1600 dollars in hunting license fees. Judge Stevens held prior law did not grant such rights. 1913 legislation legalized retention. The county board will decide in November whether to appeal to the supreme court, amid differing opinions from lawmakers and the attorney general.

Picnic At Devils Lake Brings Sunday School Fun

The South Side M. E. church Sunday school held its annual picnic at Devils Lake on a sunny day. Children and adults enjoyed races, bathing, rowing, and a large lunch with lemonade and hot coffee. Prizes were awarded to Luella Polglase Ariane Littlejohn Lorraine Keyson Charles Davis Albert Austice and Earl Littlejohn.

Professor McIntosh Returns From Pacific Coast Trip

Baraboo manual training instructor Professor W H McIntosh returned from a summer journey to the Pacific coast. He traveled via St Paul Portland Missoula Butte Spokane Seattle and San Francisco visiting friends and family and inspecting irrigation systems. Prices noted included oranges 275 a box lemons 4 a box and potatoes 325 a sack.

Mrs. John L. Vanderveer of 728 Second Street has received notice of the coming marriage of Miss Irma Schiff and Robert Klausner of Chicago. The ceremony is set for September 12 at the La Salle hotel. Miss Schiff is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Schiff, once residents of Barahkoo.

Automobile Caught by Train in Lodi Collision

Mrs. Elmer Patterson driving a Buick collided with moving train No. 513 as it pulled from Lodi on Tuesday. The car jammed between the platform and coach after skidding into the engine. brakeman halted the train within minutes. Patterson was uninjured despite a severe scare and major auto damage.
