Bailey Farm Swept By Tornado At Mirror Lake

A Kansas region tornado wrecked George Bailey's farm five miles north of Lyons. The barn, corn crib, wind mill, machine shed, granary, seven beehives and a chicken coop were destroyed while the house suffered extensive damage. Cans of milk remained upright and intact after the storm. Across the road the Stott farm orchard was flattened and a two gallon jug of liniment remained upright. Mrs Eliza Ringling bought the Crane property at Mirror Lake to develop a summer hotel with electric lighting, cottages, a dance pavilion, and other improvements aimed at making the resort popular.

St Louis carnival work shines for Miss Hatch

A St. Louis feature highlights Miss Lucile Hatch daughter of Mr and Mrs W H Hatch Baraboo as she leads the Girls Division of the War Camp Community Service. The splash carnival at Marquette Pool and Mullanphy Pool showcased swimming lessons and night exhibitions of diving life saving and water stunts.

Ringlings At Ringling Show Visit Madison

Charles Ringling was the only Ringling brother at Madison on Saturday as the Ringling Brothers and Bar num Bailey combined show toured the city. John and Alf T. Ringling were in New York with Ida Ringling North traveling from Baraboo. Della M. Ringling also joined from Baraboo with others.

Obituary Joseph Henn of Prairie du Lac dies after illness

Joseph Henn of Prairie du Lac died at his home Wednesday morning after a lingering illness. He suffered several paralytic strokes during his illness. Funeral services were held at Sauk City.

North Freedom Man Loses Finger In Threshing Accident

August Harmon of North Freedom suffered a severe cut to the third finger of his right hand while working on a threshing outfit. The injury required amputation.

Portage Man Injures Foot at Telephone Work

Portage resident Frank Clemmons, employed by the Portage Telephone company, suffered a painful cut and bruise when a large steel bar fell while replacing poles and stringing wires. He was removed to his Portage home and faces days of recovery.

Road surfacing progress on Baraboo Ableman road

About half of the road surfacing is finished while grading is complete for weeks. A special fund supported the project and subscribers are now paying into the Bank of Baraboo. Subscriptions from North Freedom and Ableman are paid at their local banks.

Reedsburg Couple Wed at Sacred Heart Church

Miss Alice Sweeney daughter of Mr and Mrs Hugh Sweeney of Reedsburg and Mr Edgar Holen of Aurora Illinois were married recently at Sacred Heart church in Reedsburg by Rev Fr Kiernan. Attendants were Miss Ella Sweney and Mr Harry Shedlowski. The couple left for a weeklong Chicago visit and will reside in Aurora Illinois.

Northwestern faces two damage suits over crossing accidents

Auto Collides With Truck at Portage

Walter Thurler driving a Ford collided with an oil tank wagon driven by Charles Bremner Saturday at Portage. The Thurler car was badly wrecked but neither driver was injured.

Reedsburg Schools Open September 8

The public schools of Reedsburg will open on Monday September 8 with enrollment day for the high school. Work starts Tuesday. Fairfield Lambasts Live Wire in Mile-High Test

A tug of nerves between Fairfield and Live Wires near Baraboo Portage produced a 25 to 8 score in favor of Fairfield. Umpire Adolphi Koepp remained uninjured amid the sharp calls. William Stonesifer and Harley Squires earned the most runs for Fairfield.

Western stock move to Wisconsin grazing lands

Sheep from western ranges have been annually moved into northern Wisconsin and the upper peninsula of Michigan for grazing. Since three years ago the operation has grown to involve no fewer than 50 000 head of sheep and 10 000 head of cattle, centered in Douglas, Washburn, Marinette and Oneida counties with broad participation across northern Wisconsin and upper Michigan.

Montello Resident Struck by Auto at Portage Street

Charles Burlingame, a well known Montello resident, was knocked down crossing Portage Street by a slow moving auto. He sustained severe bruises and was taken to a physician for treatment.

Circus Night Robbery in Madison Nets $57 and Watches

An armed black bandit robbed John Wottfried of Monticello of 45 and a gold watch after a circus in Madison. Parker Peterson lost 12 and a watch in a car robbery, while Wottfried’s partner was searched but not looted. Police scoured the area, questioning about eight suspects, with early lead pointing to a six foot tall dark man.

Wisconsin Soldiers Bonus Referendum Call September 2

Voters will decide on a Wisconsin soldiers bonus to pay ten dollars a month for each month served with a minimum of fifty dollars. The $15 million cost will be raised by a three mill direct tax and income taxes on individuals and corporations based on 1918 earnings.

Rupert Smith an 11 year old from Owen suffered a severe foot injury when his sweater snagged in machinery as he jumped from a hay rack and landed on a scythe. Doctors fear the foot may be lost as all cords and bone were cut.

Tuberculosis Condemns Entire Troy Herds

The Prairie du Sac News reports in Troy town that 21 cattle on Edgar Tooley’s farm tested tuberculin positive and were condemned after examinations by Dr. L Steuber and Dr. W R Claussen. In the same town 34 head on Henry Schweppe’s farm were condemned for tuberculosis.

Funeral services for Thomas Rodwell held at home

The funeral for the late Thomas Rodwell was held at his home with Rev. R. M. Laurenson officiating. The Knights of Pythias ritual at the grave was read by L. A. Winnie and Daniel Roberts sang during the service with J. E. Von Wald on violin.
