August Agriculture Report Shows Large Aggregate Surplus

The August report from the department of agriculture shows a smaller showing than July but a large aggregate above average. Crops are ample for home needs and will allow a substantial export surplus. Comparisons follow.

Thirteen young men from Sauk County left for Jefferson Barracks Missouri with their honor roll pictures taken in the park. Rev L C Ferguson hailed liberty and humanity as the war motive, stating the boys will learn the truth about Germany. Black Hawk Man Breaks Leg in Farm Accident

George Guhl of Black Hawk injured when he accidentally broke his leg while helping prepare a threshing engine at the Gasser brothers home. He was taken home after the incident and received care.

Frog Hollow Hen Drops Double Egg

James Mortimer reports from Frog Hollow and Cream Ridge near Wonewoc a hen laid a double egg. An outer shell contained an inner egg with normal shells. the hard parts were displaced and the smaller egg was normal in size. The double egg is a curiosity not often produced by fowls.

Wisconsin Draft Registration Totals Released

Major E A Fitzpatrick says Wisconsin registration for the proposed draft law enrolling ages 18 to 21 and 31 to 45 stands at 366000. About 8750 men under 21 and 5000 over 31 will be affected. data has been forwarded to Wisconsin boards.

Change Auto Tax at Washington

The Ways and Means Committee in Washington shifted from a purchase price levy to a horsepower based auto tax. Rates start at 10 dollars for up to twenty horsepower and rise to 50 dollars for horsepower above forty. A 5 percent manufacturer tax applies to motor trucks and auto wagons. The treasury suggested horsepower, but initial estimates indicated lower revenue than the purchase price plan.

Made Merry Paid Fiddler Fined in Local Court

William Holwedel paid a fine and costs of 21 dollars and 53 cents in the court of Adolph Andre. The incident, thought to involve a cork popping from a bottle, caused neighborhood excitement as Herman and Paul Stieve filed the complaint.

Madison to Hold Special Term for Espionage Sentence

After Eau Claire term, a special Madison session will sentence Judge John M. Becker of Monroe Louis B Nagler formerly assistant secretary of state and Madison druggist Charles H Naffz. Becker and Nagler were convicted of espionage act violations and Naffz pleaded guilty to disloyal utterances.

Card from Camp Stevens censored reveals possible France trip

Relatives received a censored card from Frank Draper of North Freedom and companions. Mailed from Portage, it suggests they were en route to France, but the full message remains unread. J J Auer editor of Der Herold a German language paper received eighteen months at Fort Leavenworth after pleading guilty to espionage act violations for publishing seditious material and failing to file translations with the postmaster. The seventy count indictment covered various offenses. Other defendants faced one to two year terms including Stanislaw Janick Port Edwards and Emil Schiller Grand Rapids both jailed at Fort Leavenworth.

Baraboo Men Aid Harvest Efforts Across Farms

Baraboo businessmen and local residents volunteer in harvesting and threshing as grain crops rebloom. Twenty two workers helped in a single day with many farms waiving charges when the farmer was ill. Threshing has begun and yields are immense including a farmer who switched land from wheat to oats and reports a double oats yield.

Louis Hoxie son of Mrs Edith Hoxie of Sterling Colorado was injured while oiling a threshing machine his clothing caught in cogwheels twisting him into the machinery his right foot was amputated his left arm was broken in two places and he was otherwise severely hurt the young man about twenty formerly resided in Spring Green

Cottage Burns on River Near Kilbourn

This morning at 8 o'clock the smaller Riverside cottage on the Wisconsin river owned by O. S. Atcherson was burned to the ground with its contents. Mr and Mrs Esenberg of Chicago, parents of Mrs Clinton Berry, occupied it and were away. They lost all clothing. The cottage was insured. Kilbourn Events.

John Hoffman a Cincinnati millionaire meat packer is arrested on charges related to alleged anti American action. The meat packers association is conducting an investigation.

Sauk County Country Life group holds local meet at Devils Lake

The Sauk County Country Life association held its annual gathering on the Kirk land side of Devils Lake with a morning shower. Speakers included Miss Stillman on barley flour use, Do. H Everett on farming and legislation, and Senator Roy P Wilcox on war work and Wisconsin policy. Events featured indoor basketball, tug of war, relay shoe race, and volleyball with campers and visitors competing.
