Sauk City crowd views air show as Lena Snell dies in fire

A Sauk City aviation event drew a large crowd led by Mrs. H L Potter of Madison with flights costing a dollar a minute. Miss Lena Snell aged 14 died after kerosene on a fire caused burns. the Snell home burned. Bunn the baker bought land atop Cheek’s hill and will move, selling the Walnut street bakery. Captain and Mrs Goodearl relocate near the new Bunn property.

Baraboo Cruises to Victory Over Burgess Battery 13 to 9

Baraboo defeats Burgess Battery of Madison 13 to 9 at Devils Lake. Baraboo led early and held off late rallies as Gannon pitched for Baraboo and Woolford started for Burgess Battery. Baraboo's offense capitalized on Madison errors and solid fielding.

Portage Resident Passes Away After Long Life of Service

De Witt D. Porter died in Portage after a long career in the livery business and the mail carrier service. Born July 21, 1850, in Protection New York, he moved to Wisconsin in 1856 with his father Lourenzo Porter. He is survived by his widow Sarah Ann Merwin, a son Frank E. Porter a daughter Mary E. Porter city librarian and three brothers.

Walter Nugent Dies at 33 in Milwaukee Streetcar Work

The body of Walter Nugent age 33 a returned soldier who died of stomach trouble in Milwaukee was brought to Portage and then to Briggsville for burial. His mother Mrs Julia Nugent accompanied the remains. He is survived by six brothers and one sister and will be buried at Briggsville parish cemetery after services at St Marys Church Briggsville.

A Lone Rock native, Reuben Johnson, is reported dead in New York a day after a telegram announced his overseas arrival for his mother Mrs. Margaret Johnson. The body was brought home and funeral services were conducted at the North Otter Church on Wednesday.

Plan Honor Day at Reedsburg

A large Reedsburg crowd met at city hall to plan an Honor Day for the boys during the fair week in October. Mayor Siefert chaired. Al Niebuhr was secretary. Businessmen spoke. a three member committee Burdick Stone Daly to visit Richland Center for decorations.

Fall from cellar drains life of Portage woman

Mrs. Carl Gutknecht aged 77 of Portage died at 213 Volk Street two weeks after a fall down a cellar. She suffered a fractured hip and other injuries. Found unconscious on the basement floor by her grandson Franklin. Husband died 12 years ago. Survived by five children William Fred Frank Alma and August who is with the colors in France.

Massive Peas Packed at Beaver Dam Junction Plant

A packing company at Beaver Dam Junction processed 76,000 cases of peas, totaling 1,824,000 cans. The output indicates a large-scale canning operation and significant production volume at the facility.

Ruel Home on First Street Sold to Sanford Wicks

Miss Matilda Real sold her brick home at the corner of First and Ash Streets to Sanford Wicks of Orangeburg South Carolina. The 1881 house was built for the Ruel family who lived there with parents two sons and a daughter Miss Reul remains in the house. Wicks brings his wife married daughter and husband Claud Hayden and daughter to reside there. Wicks formerly ran a wood working factory later acquired by Ringling Brothers and has sold a 240 acre cotton plantation.

Ships greet Admiral Rodman in San Diego welcome

The Long Beach Press reports preparations to greet the Pacific fleet with Admiral Hugh Rodman and Secretary Daniels arriving on the New Mexico. Wheat yield to show loss in latest crop estimates

The crop reporting board of the Bureau of Crop Estimates releases new figures from its correspondents. Winter wheat production is 715 million bushels with a yield of 14.6 bushels per acre versus December forecasts and a 1913–1917 average. Spring wheat condition stands at 53.9 with 225 million bushels produced and a 10 bushel yield. All wheat production totals 940 million bushels with a 13.1 bushel per acre yield, down from December estimates.

Man Returns to Kenosha Hospital Then Quarrel Follows

James Kane of Kenosha praised hospital care after a car accident but left for home and reentered the facility. He argued with hospital authorities, ended up jailed, and was released on promise to stay home.

First Sergeant Rollin B. Curtis of Company A 128th Infantry received a government citation for extraordinary heroism in France in 1918. Autos Clash at Portage

A collision at a Portage street corner injured Miss Emma Dreyer and damaged two cars. Joseph Ripple of Endeavor, driving a Studebaker, and Charles Roeker of Lewiston collided near the city bank. Ripple paid $13 for damages and the medical bill. no court action followed. Chief Curry called the crash unavoidable.

Disabled Soldier Who Switched Fronts Sought Return to War

A World War I disabled soldier known as the man who would not die Lou Lazar Resenkoff, a Russian discharged from the 149th field artillery Rainbow division, studied at the University of Wisconsin after ten months in France. He fled from Siberia to New York via a dead man’s pass and bribes, danced in vaudeville, and enlisted in the American army to avenge his brothers killed in the Russian revolution. He later completed electrical engineering at Wisconsin under the federal vocational education program.

Hunters fined for shooting prairie chickens in Necedah case

Conservation warden F A Ceckham returned to Necedah with four hunters charged for shooting prairie chickens. Three men paid 50 dollar fines each, the fourth 100 dollars plus 5 dollars per bird for seven birds, totaling 135 dollars, with costs. No chicken hunting allowed until 1921 as chickens are rapidly multiplying.

Boy undergoes rib removal surgery to aid recovery

Roger Williams eight year old son of Mr and Mrs Hugh Williams Port age ill with pneumonia improved after a piece of rib was removed to treat lung infection. The operation came after puss formed in the lungs and a critical surgery was deemed necessary. Roger now has a chance for complete recovery.
