New Elephant Arrives at Madison Park Zoo

Alf Ringling transfers Anna the 16 year old Indian elephant to Dr Corydon Dwight of the Madison Zoological Society for the city zoo. Anna arrived from New York in a special car and settles in at Vilas Park near the elk pen. Dwight says she is pleased with her new surroundings and may give Madison children rides in future summers.

Local Merchants Aid Cyclone Rebuilding in Baraboo

Baraboo residents and merchants aided by Assemblyman George Carpenter report rapid rebuilding after a cyclone. Ministers Rev J Lloyd Smith and Rev C E Weed helped erect barns and assist with crops, with Joe Harris farm cited for full yield. Threshing remains. W E Rowland directs aid calls via telephone.

Son of La Follette in Critical Condition

Robert M. La Follette Jr. is reported desperately ill at Hot Spring Virginia after a months long illness from poisoning following a throat trouble. Senator La Follette is to be called as a witness before the committee on privileges and elections investigating charges against his loyalty after Congress meets.

Canning Ends On 1918 Pea Crop At Frank Herfort Plant

This morning the last of the 1918 pea crop was canned at the Frank Herfort Canning company plant. About a million and a half cans have been filled over five weeks. The crop was normal and slightly below last year. Employment ranged from 125 to 150 workers, with many soon labeling cans. Shipments start immediately as the pack is sold. After three weeks the corn crop will be canned for market.

Selectmen Sail for Camp to Train for War Effort

Twenty two young men from Baraboo area depart for Camp Taylor Kentucky after a community ceremony near the courthouse. Mayor Thaever Rev Weed and Rev Smith praised liberty and patriotism as the Baraboo Marine Band played and a police-led march to the train concluded the event. Fox farm adds 82 silver black foxes in shipment

Dr Collins manager of the Reedsburg fox farm announces a record consignment from Prince Edward Island. The shipment of eighty two silver black foxes is the largest single delivery ever made to the farm marking a notable expansion of local fur operations.

Enroll Women in War Work Call Draws 25 000 Recruits

The government seeks 25 000 young women ages 19 to 35 to train for the student nurse reserve. Enrollees pledge to serve until April 1, 1919, with assignments to civilian hospital schools or a government nursing school. Sauk county quota is twenty. Mrs. H J Irwin and Mrs. Frank Avery lead the drive through Red Cross and Council of Defense at the post office recruit station open 10-12 and 2-6.

Dithmar Announces Candidacy for Renomination

Lieutenant Governor E. F. Dithmar of this city announces his bid for re election to the office he has held for four years He notes that all current elective state officers seek renomination and says he would not decline to run again in view of the present crisis Wisconsin has shown loyalty to the national war effort and will support all needed legislation and economy in state affairs and a brief legislative session is desired by the people

Sauk City Canning Plant Ends Record Season

The Sauk City canning factory wrapped a six week run ending last Saturday. A Roxbury grower yielded 25,423 pounds of peas from four acres. The season packed 1,958,000 cans, 27,000 more than last year. Corn packing is set to start late August.

Fire destroys granary near Glen damaging Bowler farm

Fire at the old Bowler farm granary near Glen destroyed the building during supper. About two hundred bushels of oats, several small tools, a milk wagon and a heater stored for summer were lost. The Marshall family faces a heavy financial blow from the blaze.

House Ways and Means Frames 8 Billion Revenue Bill

The committee agreed on doubling taxes on tobacco products and raising levies on brokers theaters and amusements including billiard and pool parlors bowling alleys and corporate capital. A new one percent sales tax on retailers with over 100000 annual business was adopted and passenger and Pullman rates join an eight percent uniform tax. Stamp taxes remain unchanged.

Girl Eleven Swims Two Miles at Camp Gordon

At Camp Gordon near the old Dell House a group of about 14 girls aged 11 to 16, led by Mrs. E L Wengler of Madison, performs outdoor study and exercises in French, interpretive dances, swimming, and physical training. The other day five girls, the youngest 11, swam from the Dell House to Kilbourn, nearly two miles.

War Department eyes draft age extension to 19 36

War department may widen draft ages to 19 to 36 to bolster forces already overseas. Congress to hear recommendations next week as committees are recalled to Washington. Estimates suggest possible overall army around five million if shipment rates hold, with large contingents overseas and at home ready for action.

Big Boat Reaches Portage From Oshkosh via Fox River

Captain B. Oleson of Wisconsin Dells arrives at Portage with a 38 foot by nine foot cabin launch after navigating a sandbar filled Fox River. Dredging is needed to improve passage. The vessel will be used for pleasure rides at the Dells.

Narrow Escape From Drowning At Lake Wisconsin

Miss Lucile Linermann fourteen, daughter of Mr and Mrs August Linermann of Chicago, nearly drowned at Lake Wisconsin near the Robert Aton home in Merrimiack. Mrs Arthur Subert, a skilled swimmer, entered the water fully dressed to save her, aided by other ladies who formed a line by joining hands to reach the girl.

Child Falls From Mow in Winfield

Five year old Francis Welch of Winfield fell from a hay mow while playing. He slid and jumped and landed on his leg breaking it above the ankle. His parents are listed as Mr and Mrs Welch.

Reedsburg Canning Caps Year With High Pea Output

The Reedsburg Canning company finishes its pea season reporting the best year for quality and quantity. Superintendent J. H. Andrew notes 682 560 cans produced and farmer M. E. Carr earned 940 dollars for his crop.

Nagler Guilty On Espionage Charge In Wisconsin Court

Louis B. Nagler once assistant secretary of state was found guilty by a Madison federal jury in Eau Claire of violating the espionage act. He uttered that the YMC A YWCA and Red Cross are grafts and questioned government leadership. Sentencing may bring up to 20 years and 10 000 dollars fine.

Briggsville man dies after fall from wagon

John Dugan of Briggsville was fatally injured when he fell from his wagon while driving home from Portage. He was brought to his home where medical aid was summoned and several bruises were noted. He was a married man.

No Lemonade Policy at County Fairs

The county fair will not serve lemonade and no sugar certificates will be issued to churches clubs associations or temporary eating places at fairs for sugar used in lemonade. Table service sugar may go to temporary eating places serving twenty five or more daily with county approval and a meals served statement.

Fourth Liberty Loan Opens September 28

Secretary McAdoo announced that the fourth Liberty Loan campaign will begin September 28 and end October 19, a three week period. The nation is expected to subscribe about 5 billion dollars. Past campaigns raised about 9.5 billion dollars in Liberty bonds.
