Picnic day at Prairie du Lac features Newcomb volley and team contests
A Prairie du Lac outing with Edwin Schneller of the Detroit Y M C A introduced Newcomb, a variant of volleyball allowing catches near the net. Six teams of men and boys competed in events like standing broad jump, shot put, hop-step-and-jump, tug of war, and a 60-yard dash, led by captains Harold Berkley and H K Hill. The Lyons team won volley, and Berkley’s squad also excelled in the 60-yard dash and boxing-like sailor’s reach contest.
