Sauk County picnic at Devils Lake draws half turnout

The Sauk County Country Life association held its annual picnic at Devils Lake with a special Elroy train of 112 dollars funded by the Baraboo Commercial association. Attendance was about half of last year due to late season and farm work pulling people home. The program featured music, speeches, and county officials praising agricultural efforts and state defense work.

Picnic day at Prairie du Lac features Newcomb volley and team contests

A Prairie du Lac outing with Edwin Schneller of the Detroit Y M C A introduced Newcomb, a variant of volleyball allowing catches near the net. Six teams of men and boys competed in events like standing broad jump, shot put, hop-step-and-jump, tug of war, and a 60-yard dash, led by captains Harold Berkley and H K Hill. The Lyons team won volley, and Berkley’s squad also excelled in the 60-yard dash and boxing-like sailor’s reach contest. Guards from Baraboo’s Company I aided crowd safety as evening Marine band concerts drew many visitors to the north shore.

Picnic Pickups And A Lake Side Train Delay In Baraboo

Hot weather and national airs drew crowds to the picnic as clubs excelled in events. Notable attendees included Max Hill T M Mould W A Toole Archie Carlisch Dwight Getchell and E E Berkley who led the team with the most wins. Baraboo train arrival featured a crowd wait and late departure. W D Stauffacher Monticello cow tester attended with Alvin Wardas Noel Negrey from Madison also present.

Expert Judges Named for State Fair at West Allis

Seven department superintendents and a roster of specialists were chosen for the sixty seventh State fair at West Allis September 10 to 15. Government plans for insuring fighters in war service

Basic fundamentals of the government's plan to insure army navy and marine corps personnel against death and injury are being worked out in Washington with federal officials and representatives of leading insurance companies. The program would provide government allowances for families of service members and training for injured soldiers and sailors to reenter the workforce after the war.

Duane Griffy is laid up at his parents Portage home after a foot injury at Prospect Point near the city pumping station. A broken bottle caused a deep cut requiring several stitches to close the wound.

Caledonia Man Injured Falling From Cherry Tree

Ed Schmidt son of Mr Mrs Albert Schmidt Caledonia fell from a cherry tree at his father farm Thursday afternoon and received serious injuries to his neck and head. He was taken to Portage and is now at his sister Mrs Otto Kopplin home in that city.

Minister Helps In Hayfield On Tinkham Farm

Rev. J. Lloyd Smith, pastor of the Congregational Church, aided on George Tinkham’s hayfield. Tinkham’s son serves in the army, leaving the father alone on the farm. The minister helped at a fork end and the hay was stored in the barn.

The local exemption board has received the master list from Washington and will prepare notices. In Sauk county 171 men are drafted with 342 notices to be sent. notices give five days to appear. Examinations start next Friday or Saturday, with one third summoned each day.

Road improvements ease travel to Devils Lake

Two improvements were completed on the north end road to Devils Lake. City officials filled ruts before Crawford's Crossing and rolled the highway smooth with a steam roller. Park Superintendent Atwood Smith directed removal of large rocks near the Devils Lake end.

Vegetation across Wisconsin shows good growth per the state crop report. Corn remains backward while showers, some heavy with hail and wind, slowed haying and corn cultivation. Beans peas potatoes and sugar beets are good to excellent with generally favorable track and small grains।

A Seattle paper reports George Dudley of 1240 Concord street has shown improvement after being listed in a dying condition following a July 16 automobile accident at 14th avenue south and Sullivan street. Dudley, formerly with the Chicago and Northwestern at Baraboo, is well known in the area.

Passengers narrowly escape as a large machine topples over a riverbank at night near the city. A child is rescued and safety crews respond promptly to the incident.

Narrow escape as car overturns into Gillson slough

Dr H A Keenan, wife, and four others ride from Stoughton to Camp Douglas in a seven passenger Studebaker when the auto left the Baraboo road near Gillson slough. The car turtled into eight foot water. all climbed out or were rescued with minor injuries. The party then received aid at the McGilvra/ Lewis home and the machine was hauled out.
