A diver narrates a perilous submerged ascent to the Marmion wreck off Newfoundland. He and Rimmer explore the wreck, encounter haunting scenes of drowning passengers, struggle with heavy armor, and escape as the Marmion sinks upright then capsizes. Rescuers in a small boat await as the diver surfaces to safety.
In a dramatic Madison sermon Rev. Henry Ward Beecher read from Matthews and then presented Sarah, a young enslaved woman raised by a Southern planter, as a test case for emancipation. The audience raised funds totaling 761 dollars on the spot to purchase her freedom and save a four year old child also in bondage. The scene drew tears and praise as the crowd pledged their support and one man offered to assume the full sum if needed. The affair was described as among the most remarkable devotional moments in the county.
