A fragment from a historic periodical recounts Rapp’s plan to thread pines down Mount Pilatus to Lake Lucerne, a nine mile journey. It describes a 24 thousand pine trough, the Slide of Alpnagh, completed in 1812, with trees up to one hundred feet long racing to the lake, moistened to prevent drying as onlookers marvel at the speed.
