Fragmented verses describe bright sky and fading night, glistening rays, and morning light. Vivid images of winds and youth convey a sense of fleeting time and hopeful futures as melodies rise and scatter.
A single man recalls a concert night in Boston where he pursued a dark eyed beauty wearing a blue coat. A distraction with a button entanglement leads to a chance meeting and a bracelet lost in the ensuing chaos. He posts an advertisement to recover the bracelet and attract the lady, hoping to solve the mystery of his paramour.
A narrator, claiming to be Othello’s loved one, visits Cambridge Place to restore a bracelet stolen from Miss Reymond. Disguised in a blue coat with brass buttons, he states he is not a pickpocket and presents the recovered bracelet to a brother who initially stiffens at the audacious ruse. The scene ends with the brother offering his purse in recognition.
A confessed pickpocket explains in a newspaper advertisement that he did steal a lady's bracelet to expose a false accusation. The tale includes a sister’s description, a tea invitation, and a public admission that leads to libel damages. The narrative closes with a twist on the bridal couple and the tale titled A Bacnuton's Bere.
Fragment from a historical reminiscence recounts Sandusky during a protracted famine when bay waters fell, land transport failed, and the town faced starvation. A hunter named Joe saved the city by using a herd of blind wild hogs to feed the starving residents, driving them into a corral and slaughtering them for relief.
