The resignation of Secretary Ballinger dated January 19 has been accepted in Washington. President appoints Walter I. Fisher of Chicago to take the office in a few days amid ongoing controversy over conservation and criticism of Ballinger.
The Gem City Literary Society met at the Kramer home to debate whether the United States should maintain a large navy. The affirmative speakers were Myron Dick and Paul Shew, the negative were Mr. Atwater and Walter Lusby, with a two to one win for the affirmative. The program included song and phonograph music, and the next meeting is set for March 17 at the Clark home.

Wesley Prothero longtime county settler died at his daughter Mrs. A G Glovers home on Lake street at 4 this morning from paralysis He was born in Indiana March 2 1826 and came to the county in 1851 later living in Monroe county and Ruthven Iowa He leaves a sister Mrs Martha Capener brothers Jay Joplin Evan Indianapolis Morton a daughter and four sons with residences listed in Iowa Idaho Idaho and Washington state
Timothy Doyle, age 24, died of pneumonia after visiting an uncle in St Paul. He was taken to a hospital but died before his father John Doyle could see him. The funeral was held in Ironton with the body brought there for burial.
Martin Accola aged eighty died suddenly in his Prairie du Lac home Friday night. He appeared well at retirement and was found dead in bed the next morning. The funeral was held today from the Reformed church.
Miss Elsa Toeder returned from Chicago where she lived and died Sunday evening March 5 from heart trouble and complications. She leaves two sisters and two brothers. Mrs Herman Koenecke and Mrs Bietrick visit Milwaukee. Walter and Mary Prouty visited Henry Dorow with Helen Dorow accompanying them home. Dist No 6 school closes for two weeks. Ross and Roe Shultis host the Choral club at Frank Montgomery home. S Z Hudson was a Reedsburg caller.
Miss Alice Mc Coy and John Fabry, both of North Freedom, married at the Presbyterian manse the home of Rev E C Henke at noon. They were attended by Mr and Mrs E Bruce Mc Coy of North Freedom. They depart for a southern States trip and will live in Freedom where the groom operates a farm.
A Bara Boo jail inspection by J. S. Griggs William Riggert and J M Kundschi poor commissioners found about a dozen inmates kept at taxpayer expense. Six worked on the rock pile while others lounged, and a tramp vanished as the group gathered. The scene followed a county officers monthly meeting with unclear motives or details.
Congress adjourned without confirming several state postmasters and the Baraboo office will stay as is. Frank L. Gilbert of Madison remains in question for internal revenue collector, so no change occurs there either.
Sauk County folk report improvement after accidents. Miss Hashieder formerly of Prairie du Sac uses crutches following a prior leg fracture. Her sister Mrs. J Hatz of Prairie du Sac assists. Clark Squires who burned himself after a boiler incident is up and around.
Italians in Madison court over cheese taken from a Milwaukee freight car. A. T. Bruhm, Sauk City cheese factory co-owner, identified the box stencil. A. C. Struck testified P. H. Peacock of Madison bought the cheese. Feb 7 saw 103 cheeses shipped, factory records show 76 received.
George Hunt, a pioneer resident of Ironton, died Sunday at about 80. He long lived southwest of the village before moving to town. Death occurred at his son's home. Funeral services by Elder Bloom of Monticello, assisted by Rev. Boyer.
A marriage notice records Clarence Denzer and Hila Wen zer of Honey Creek as engaged to wed. The notice notes both parties are residents of Honey Creek and lists their intends to marry.

T Clavadatscher returns from Chicago with a batch of goods sold by order of the court. Merchandise came from Kansas City. H W Abbott reports from Lake Mendota where ice is at least 18 inches thick. He notes it will float ground briefly then sink as spring nears.
President Taft declares 20 000 troops and a large naval force must be mobilized within five days. The action targets the Mexican border with Texas and Gulf port Galveston to address concerns over U S military readiness.

In Westfield Henry Wolschleger was injured while sawing wood at Herman Ties’s home when a lubricating oil can struck his upper lip and knocked him unconscious. His brother helped pull him away from the engine, averting worse harm.
M. T. Williams of Milwaukee is visiting friends in the city, stopping briefly to catch up with local acquaintances and enjoy a short stay.
