Peat Fuel Question Stirs Local Investment Debate
The Lamartine Peat Light and Power Co is incorporated for 150000 in Fond du Lac county. An expert estimates peat fuel manufacture at 0.77 per ton. With 100 tons daily over 160 days, 16000 tons could yield 80000 in revenue. After expenses of 19200, net profit would be 60800, a 40 percent return on capital. The column asks whether to invest in peat stock and burn peat locally or send money abroad for coal.
