Newton Clark Chosen Oregon Grand Army of the Republic Leader
Mary Dwinnell received a clipping noting Newton Clark named department commander of the Grand Army of the Republic for Oregon. A Baraboo native, he enlisted in the Fourteenth Wisconsin Infantry, fought in the Army of the Tennessee, and earned a lieutenant's commission after Corinth 1862. He settled in Hood River in 1878, helped found Canby Post G A R, and led the Oregon AOUW for two decades.

Mrs. Bertha Hansch 48 died at 9:30 PM at her sister Mrs Julius Gust 733 Mound Street after a yearlong decline. Born in Switzerland she came to the U S at age three. She leaves brothers John and Jacob Neiderer of Madison sisters Mrs Gust Baraboo and Mrs William Moelman Madison two sons Robert Lyons and Albert Delton. Funeral Friday at 2 PM at the German Lutheran church.

Methodist Church Wins the Banner at Parade
The First M. E. church Sunday school won the banner for having the largest parade group about 162 in line, with roughly 400 total in the procession. After the lake reached, a dray load of goodies disappeared, contests entertained, and the day ended in festive pleasure. Some boys missed the parade and faced trouble getting ice cream, while others with pasteboards were admitted to the ice cream counter. The boys vow to keep their lights shining at the next big day.
