Charles S. Ladd of Merrimack, a Mexican War veteran, served in Springfield and Vera Cruz with the Third Artillery and lost his right arm at Chapultepec. He later worked as a watchman at the Merrimack bridge for 27 years and has drawn a government pension since 1849, possibly Sauk County’s oldest.

A severe wind and lightning storm damages Portage causing widespread crop and property loss. The Wisconsin river bridge west of the business district is ripped from its piers and swept downstream about 300 yards. The 630 foot bridge, built in 1857, was the largest wagon bridge in the state and a point of navigation dispute with Wisconsin Dells. Portage must plan a new bridge at an estimated cost around 50 thousand dollars and divert traffic to ferries until rebuilt.
Portage Wisconsin August 3. A 16 year old girl named Warren from near Briggsville eloped with farm hand McGee. The outraged father tracked them to Portage where the couple then escaped.
Carl Boeck 22 killed wife 19 by throat cutting and back stabbings in Portage Wisconsin. He jumped into the canal to suicide but was saved and later surrendered at the county jail. Their three and a half year marriage produced a two year old child. The motive remains unknown. The woman’s body was found behind a tobacco warehouse. Boeck is a butcher. his parents live in Portage.

The barn valued at 1500 to 2000 and partly insured, was the second lightning loss on that site. Neighbors aided in saving the house from fire.
A about ninety relatives and friends gathered at Mrs. Henry Marriott’s Ash Street home for the marriage of Hattie Marriott to Elmer Johnston. After a ceremonial ring service, the couple vanished before midnight and have not been heard from, with plans reportedly to tour the Great Lakes. they will reside with the bride’s mother at 704 Ash Street upon return.
Fire department was summoned at four this afternoon to a western city location after a woman attempted to mail a letter in an outdoor fire alarm box. No fire or injuries were reported.
Edward Cummings a 15 year old boy arrested for vagrancy describes being pressured by an itinerant group led by a man known as Black Jim. He says the group recruited boys aged 15 to 18 to work for farmers for about ten dollars monthly with little pay and promises of turning them into itinerant workers during winter. Police strive to capture Black Jim and dismantle the operation.
Miss Maude Roeberger has returned from a most enviable visit to the Pacific coast, detailing pleasant travels and local highlights observed during the trip.
Portage Wisconsin common council votes to run a free ferry across the Wisconsin river until a new bridge replaces the storm wrecked one. A steamer scow from the Maine is being fitted as a ferry to begin tomorrow. Local damage includes hail wind wrecked sheds and rising river. Former judge M W Barden claims a state franchise and seeks compensation. An excursion boat Apollo from Kilbourn will be first to pass since bridge construction.
Misses Rida Hodson and Alice Long of Linn street gained a cemetery permit six weeks ago to bury a dog in Oak Hill. After harsh editorials targeted the Janesville board, a second dog died and the pair, denied a cemetery burial, ordered a private casket and grave in their yard with flowered mound.
Reynolds Lafferty brake is being fitted for a trial on engine 906. A. L. Hess, formerly locomotive fireman, becomes Indian Farmer on the Winnebago reservation in Nebraska. He departed on No. 508. Engine 615, a switch engine for Baraboo, arrived last night as the railroad prepares for heavy future business.
