Laconia Sunk by German Submarine Killing Passengers
The Cunard liner Laconia was torpedoed off Liverpool on February 18 after leaving New York. Twenty six Americans aboard, plus 75 passengers and a crew of 216, were aboard with substantial cargo including wheat, cotton, fruit and shell casings. The ship carried 5000 bags of mail. one casualty was reported.

Old Settler James S Drust Dies at Carlyle
James S Drust known as Charley and one of the first settlers on the Big Hill died at his Carlyle home Sunday morning of paralysis after several months illness. He was 57 and had farmed near Dennis until last fall. An Odd Fellow for 30 years his body was taken to Bloomington for burial with widow and mother. Funeral rites were held at home before shipment east with several lodge members present.
