The National Republican notes that nearly eighty million dollars were collected in 1924 from gasoline taxes, used for highways. Thirty five states plus Washington DC had gas tax laws, with about fifty million dollars for state highways and the rest for local roads or school funds. New laws in Kansas, Michigan, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Wyoming raise the total to forty states, while Indiana increases its rate to three cents.
