Washington reports German submarines have sunk 686 neutral vessels since the war began, including 19 American, and attacked 79 others including eight Americans, with many neutral ships staying in port. about 230 Americans have been lost on neutral and belligerent ships combined.
Washington reports the National Agricultural Society urged immediate creation of a federal food commission with power to fix prices and supervise marketing and distribution during the war. The move aims to avert a threatened food shortage by expanding crop acreage and easing clothing production, with President Wilson appealing for patriotic farm support.
President Wilson sent a message thanking President Poincare for congratulations as the United States enters the war. He calls France a partner in democracy and honors the shared struggle for human rights and liberty.

Chas Shear and John Fogel form a retail meat partnership in Baker leasing the Jasperson building on West Main street. Knight to Organize Lee Dennis of R. and S. announces that Gate City lodge will be instituted next Tuesday April 17 with work at four o clock p m. Miles City team expected to perform the initiation and many prospective members have signified their desire to join.
Gulbranson returns to Baker and tells the Sentinel the creamery will be open to receive cream next Monday. Patrons from last season and new supporters are urged to supply cream to build a lasting industry for the farmers of the territory.
The new clothing firm Mogren & Hazeton debuts after Jack Hazelton buys Ole Anderson out and returns to Aberdeen. The shop becomes a hotspot for young men seeking quality attire in town.
Mrs Wolverton and children visited the Cobleigh home last week while Mrs Ross returned to her Big Hill home after weeks with her parents. Mrs Staus visited Ames who remains ill and cared for by Staus. Cedar Butte's Mr and Mrs Clark called on Mrs Ames. O'Donnell family joined Easter at the Cobleigh home. Mrs Knox and Mrs Staus also visited Ames. The Stauses returned to Walton Young place after helping Staus' parents. Harry Cobleigh of Minneapolis spent time with his parents. Mrs Staus aided at Ames home this week. Mr and Mrs Finch and Mrs Cobleigh visited Ames. Mr and Mrs Dean hosted a card party Thursday. Dr C L Proctor traveled from Ekalaka en route to the Twin Cities for recreation. Ben Bowmer and family moved west with their household goods after selling a Webster farm.
