President Roosevelt receives a second operation on the left leg abscess to relieve swelling and drain the wound. Doctors report no danger and indicate a quick, complete recovery with the aim of speeding healing and enabling a possible ride in coming days.
Minneapolis mill workers accept eight hour day with a new wage scale. sweepers gain 1 cent extra per day and other grades receive raises up to 35 cents per hour for eight hours. The plan, to go into effect Oct 13, may spread to national mills through a new employer union. A separate Interior Dept dispute over Mille Lacs Indian funds threatens wider impact on tribal payments and fees. Fires destroy a stockton structure after a gas main explosion. Stocktu district fair ends as exhibitors face heavy losses and homelessness.
The Montana Republican state convention met amid cheers to endorse Roosevelt for president in 1904. Joseph M. Dixon of Missoula was nominated for Congress and Judge W L Hollo way of Bozeman for associate justice of the supreme court. J C Auld opened the meeting and Dixon was elected temporary chairman. Thomas M Carter became permanent chairman.
In Butte Montana on September 29 F Augustus Heinze organized a new political party named the Anti-Trust Democracy. Primaries were scheduled for Monday with a convention the next day. Former Governor Robert B Smith spoke for the group criticizing the regular Democracy and alleging ties with Amalgamated Copper Standard Oil and Senator Clark.
Chicago residents and Jewish congregations adopted resolutions thanking Secretary Hay for his protest against the treatment of Romanian Jews. President Roosevelt and Hay were publicly praised for their stance during the day in Chicago.

With President Mitchel and Secretary Wilson en route from Pittsburgh to the city a conference of mine strike leaders is expected to be held here as they did not reach until morning.
The British ship Claverdon, arriving from Hamburg, reports a hurricane encounter on August 25 with five crew lost and every movable item washed overboard. All sails except the lower mainsail were carried away.
Manila reports a second U S expedition under Captain John J Pershing, Fifteenth Infantry, leaves Camp Vicars with infantry, cavalry, artillery and engineers to build a pontoon bridge and corduroy trail. Rafts may attack forts from the lake side. assault date undetermined. The sultan of Butig had been captured and released, supplying horses for transport.
Fifteen hundred workers in New Orleans struck over wage and hour demands, leaving no street cars in operation. Union and management prepared for a broader clash as the company sought 900 new hires and police presence, then drew back the ad. Arbitration was proposed but no peace in sight.
A life sized Louis Kossuth statue was revealed in Cleveland before about 50 000 people. The twenty foot pedestal figure by Hungarian sculptor Andrew Tothe of Debreaisin Hungary was unveiled with addresses by Mayor Johnson Senator Hanna Congressman Burke and Governor Nash. The ceremony included speeches in foreign languages and a street parade with Hungarian and allied societies six thousand marching.
The Alagamated Meat and Cattle Butcher Workmen of North America picnic at Lake Contrary featured a beef dressing contest won by Lafe Porlier of Chicago who dressed his steer in 3 minutes 55 and a fraction seconds. The previous world record was 4 minutes 33 and a fraction seconds set by A Nelson of Kansas City.
Duluth Sept 29 eight horses perished in a barn blaze at Proctorknott Minnesota including Smoky once Buffalo Bills favorite. Smoky aged and given to Helen Cody Wetmore of Duluth by Colonel Cody. Frederic Remington is said to have painted Buffalo Bill mounted on Smoky.
North western Telephone Go advertises long distance lines and connections serving over 3,000 cities and towns across Minnesota North and South Dakota Iowa and Wisconsin. Copper metallic circuits offer first class service and low rates.
Tom Clark alias William Gibson a young negro confessed to the 19 Aug murder and other crimes. A committee of twelve judged him guilty and oversaw the public execution by fire at the Corinth East Gate with over 5000 spectators. Clark asked to bid farewell to relatives in Memphis but they were abroad in Mississippi.
Joseph Emerson of Vicksburg shot Rosa Borowoski in Memphis on September 29 then wounded himself, a likely fatal act. The incident involved a serious gun injury to the woman and a probable self inflicted wound by Emerson.
Mrs Helen Dickson died after an intruder climbed in through a window and attacked her, choking her while her three year old son and niece Miss Helen Robertson slept. Robertson was assaulted and the assailant fled after she screamed. Robertson father, asleep nearby, could not stop him. Mrs Dickson left three children, two of whom live in Chicago.
Harrisburg September 29 Governor Stone orders the Sheridan troop of Tyrone to report to General Gobin for duty in the anthracite strike region. The unit travels to reinforce the Thirteenth at Olyphant while Harrisburg and Second Philadelphia City troops stay on duty at Shenandoah. Colonel Watres confirms no new outbreak and notes wide colliery distances. Sheriff Knorr denies signing the telegram requesting troops to Centralia.
A Willmar Minnesota thresher named Nels Johnson was shot during a fight between a party of Indians and campers near Park River North Dakota. Johnson was killed after visiting an Indian camp where liquor was reportedly used. Citizens formed a posse, arrested the Indians, and jailed them. no further fatalities occurred as the Indians offered no statements.
In St Joseph on September 29 an attempt to destroy the Walton family by dynamite occurred under the front step of their South Street store building. The blast, heard twelve miles away, damaged part of the structure but the Walton family escaped injury.
In Thurmond West Virginia on September 29 a deputy sheriff and two Black men died after a dispute over a game of craps. The shooter Black Diamond killed William Washington instantly, then wounded the deputy sheriff Watts who returned fire mortally wounding Diamond before dying.
The body of Edmund Jellinek, cashier department official of Vienna Laenderbank, was found in the Danube at Altvoerth near Kremz. He had been missing since September 18, and his embezzlements totaled 1 150 000 dollars.
Official telegrams report 500 Bulgarian revolutionists surrounded by Turkish troops at Vodena in Salonica vilayet broke through a cordon after a bloody battle. Fifty two Bulgarians were killed and 112 wounded. Turkish losses were heavy as the pursuit continues.
Edward Chapman nineteen year old ticket agent at Brown's Station five miles from Centralia Missouri was shot and killed by rowdies during the day after ejecting intoxicated men. A second shot through the telegraph window struck him in the forehead as he sat at his key.
William Godeau a cotton handler was shot and killed in his Mobile Alabama backyard while investigating a disturbance. Two gun reports were heard and neighbors found him dead with two bullet holes in his head.
Anton Heigl aged twelve and Jesse Cobbs eleven drowned in the lagoon at North park Oshkosh while skiff chasing ducks when the craft capsized authorities reported.
