Adlai Opens Saturday Campaign Swing in Twin City Stores

Adlai Stevenson will headline a series of Saturday appearances at Twin City shopping centers. Woman Doctor Fired Over Lunch With Negro Nurse

Florida's only woman county health officer Dr. Deborah Coggins is dismissed by Jefferson Taylor and Madison Counties after a joint meeting. She says the lunch in a Madison restaurant was private and to discuss Negro midwives class objectives. The crowd shouted for her firing as a hearing was denied.

Babe Didrickson Zaharias to Lie in State in Beaumont

Babe Didrickson Zaharias lies in state at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Beaumont Texas after a long battle with cancer. The famed athlete died at John Sealy Hospital Galveston and will be cremated in Houston before private graveside rites at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Zaharias, born Port Arthur, had long considered Beaumont her hometown.

Reds Invited to Observe U S Politics

Washington reports the United States invited Russia and four Soviet satellites to send observers to view the close of the presidential campaigns. A State Department spokesman said the invitation is not for a state visit and private officials expect lower ranking observers.

Austin Couple Killed in Head On Collision Near Worthington

An Austin couple Mr and Mrs Sig Sig Kner aged 64 and 62 were killed in a head on auto crash south of Worthington between 11 30 and noon. They were returning to Austin from Colorado when their car collided with a truck. Sheriff Al Reinartz reported no other fatalities and noted the couple leave behind a daughter Mrs Erschell Anderson of Austin.

Guard Units Press Hunt for Missing Patient

Three National Guard companies based in Bemidji Thief River Falls and Park Rapids join a search for 85 year old Ed Koppang who wandered from a nursing home Tuesday. About 150 guardsmen and 50 volunteers scoured woods west of Cass Lake with Air Force and Warroad planes assisting. A colored facial tissue found four miles west is the only clue yet discovered.

Matusow Gets 5 Year Term For Perjury Conviction

Harvey Matusow a 29 year old witness turned government informer was sentenced in New York to five years in prison for five counts of perjury. Each count carries five years but the judge ordered concurrent sentences. He faced up to 25 years and a $10000 fine. The case stems from his recanting testimony in the 1952 trial of 13 Communist leaders.

Bonarek Killed in Minnesota Car Crash

Fred Bonarek 37 of Justice Park Illinois died when his car ran out of control and rolled into a ditch near Saue Centre Minnesota. The crash raised the 1956 Minnesota traffic toll to 427, two more than last year.

Brownsdale Board Rejects Fifth Election On Merger

Brownsdale school leaders vote 4 to 2 against calling a fifth election to merge with Austin. They pledge to wait for legal advice or county orders, keeping students in Rose Creek and Glenville while delaying a permanent decision. County hearing on the merger continues to Oct 23.

Link Between Smoking and Cancer Report Expected

New York sources say the American Cancer Society will state a relationship between cigarette smoking and lung cancer in a four year final report. Officials believe the conclusions will be published by the newspaper in several months.

Airline Seeks End to Rochester Service in Route Review

Western Air Lines proposes dropping eight local service cities on its Denver to Minneapolis route. New Pact Sets Oct 1 Wage Increases At Hormel Plant

Local 9 negotiators and Geo A Hormel & Co officials signed a new three year agreement adding 25 cents to wages. Effective Oct 1 1956 a 10 cent rise with further 74? cent and 7 5 cent raises in 1957 and 1958, plus escalator cost of living adjustments. Night premium rises to 10 cents by Sept 1957 and female differential is scheduled for elimination by Sept 1958. An additional $1.6 million per year boosts take home pay for about 4 000 Local 9 members.

Three Iowa Prisoners Escape From Guthrie Jail

Three inmates escaped Guthrie County jail Thursday night and fled in a car bearing Montana plates. Sheriff J C McCool named suspects William Spaulding 29 from Herndon Iowa George Vale 32 of Boone Iowa and Clinton Lowden 24 of Libby Montana.

167 Year Old Indian Erupts At News Session

Javier Pereira, a reportedly 167 year old Colombian Indian, created a scene at a New York news conference, swiping at photographers and reporters. New York Hospital says medical evidence suggests extreme age but notes vigor, impaired eyesight, and a fondness for Westerns on television.
