Four people died and about twenty were injured in a fire in a double four story brick tenement in Chicago. The dead include Harry Eglovitch twenty four Lottie Eglovitch twenty one Bessie Eglevitch six months old and Samuel Alpert twenty four. Police believe the blaze started in the basement and was incendiary. Eleven families occupied the building and many women and children were rescued amid the chaos. Two babies were saved when mothers dropped them from an upper window to awaiting bystanders.
President Taft arrived in Kansas City after a rapid day touring southeastern Kansas addressing the National Conservation congress. He praised Kansans warmth, noted large crowds, and spoke on vetoes of woolen, free list, and cotton tariff bills while offering to sign tariff reductions based on tariff board findings.
In Janesville Wisconsin on September 26 Leon Larson twenty two shot his wife Celia twenty one after a quarrel in Rockford. He then drank carbolic acid and killed himself. Celia Larson was hospitalized and not expected to live.
In Ray N D on September 26 a four year old boy, Ira Chamness, ran to greet his father hauling wheat and was struck when he tripped and fell under the wagon. The wheels passed over him, killing him instantly according to local report.
The international aviation meet was marred by the death of Dr. J. C. Clarke of New York an amateur aviator. He plunges 260 feet in his Queen Bleriot monoplane and dies at Nassau hospital after the craft crashes and overruns him.
J. J. Carrigan, president of the clerks union, issues a strike order for all members across the Illinois Central system. In Memphis, clerks and most laborers at the Illinois Central and Yazoo and Mississippi Valley shops walk out, signaling a wider labor move. Carrigan cites a prior 1919 agreement with Yazoo and Mississippi Valley, later annulled, as cause for action.
In New Orleans on September 26 nearly 300 clerks from the Illinois Central and Yazoo and Mississippi Valley railways walked out at yards depots and offices across the city effectively tying up business at affected stations.
In Jackson Mississippi on September 26 sixty one clerks weighmen messengers and other employees of the Illinois Central railroad walked off the job in a statewide work stoppage affecting operations and service.
Wichita voters recalled Mayor J H Graham and Commissioner E M Leach amid opposition to plans to buy a private water works plant. Dr W W Minick won the mayoral race by 1885 votes, while J K Harts beat Leach by 1300. Campbell was re-elected by 38 votes. Socialist candidates drew small totals. Allegations cited include neglect of prohibition enforcement.
McNamara was re elected by acclamation secretary of the International Association of Structural Bridge and Iron Workers. A $75 gold badge was voted to McNamara whose trial is pending in the Los Angeles Times explosion case. Initiation and contribution fees to rise from 25 to 50 if locals ratify. Executive board expand from four to six members.
William A Brown a 46 year old farmer living three miles east of Berthold N D died by self inflicted gunshot. He was a widower with three quarter sections of land and money in the bank leaving two children. A hired man S W Nelson aided in handling the body in the granary.
