Hurricane Ione battered North Carolina and then veered northward while Hilda pummeled Mexico. At least five dead in North Carolina and 166 in Mexico with 100 missing at Tampico. Floods threaten more deaths as refugees crowd and supplies falter.
The United Nations General Assembly voted 42 to 12 to shelve the issue of seating Red China until 1956. In the opening session, Chilean Jose Maza was unanimously elected president as Molotov urged Peiping’s seat in a restrained speech.
Storms raked the central and northern plains including Iowa and Minnesota with heavy rain and snow at higher elevations in the Rockies. Temperatures varied from cool in the north to warm in the Gulf and Southwest as Lemmon South Dakota and Lincoln Nebraska reported near 2 inches of rain. Political debate over Nationalist China and Red China dominated UN activity with Lodge opposing debate and Molotov urging talks to ease tension.
A six year old boy, Jeffrey Ollman, was reported missing at 11 21 am after being taken to Banfield School and not returning to his room. He was found at 1 30 pm walking north on Highway 218. He wore a maroon jacket blue jeans and a black and yellow shirt. He was last seen by the bus driver entering the school grounds.

The UAW CIO said Ford cannot justify its 1956 model price hikes averaging under five percent with gains from a strong profit position. Ford cited increases ranging from 46 to 9 dollars across body styles, while Walter Reuther was abroad. The union accused the auto maker of gouging consumers despite favorable concessions.
Bangor Maine report says S. Sgt. Howard J. McKinney of Brainerd Minnesota was checked for injuries after an air refueling aircraft KD-97 crash landed and burned near Bangor Tuesday. The 78 ton plane valued over two million dollars carried 12 crewmen. five crew and two base firemen were injured, none seriously.
Minnesota Republicans outline a soil conservation plan aimed at a stable agricultural economy. In Los Angeles Mrs Emma Niccum divorces Elwood Niccum after 41 years of separation. She states he deserted her three months after their 1914 wedding and she waited because she lacked funds for a divorce. She is 82.
Dr Robert Brunish at UCLA Medical Center announced a study of tear chemistry to identify the eye irritant in smog. He reports abundant children tears but seeks adult and women tears for comparison while noting crocodiles need not apply.
In Minneapolis a juror for the Dr. A. Arnold Axilrod murder trial was dismissed after it emerged her husband was murdered 32 years earlier during a robbery at his grocery store. Anna Sidwell, 65, said she did not realize the impact. three jurors remained, with two more chosen later.
Stillwater State Prison warden Douglas C. Rigg called Gerhard P. Kaske arrogant sarcastic and abrupt in dealings with staff and inmates. Kaske, former chief deputy warden, is appealing his June 29 dismissal after two years in the role and since 1939 on the prison staff. The Minnesota Civil Service Board denied motions to dismiss or to require more specific charges. Kaske may request time to prepare a defense after state testimony continues.
Rebels oust Peron loyalists and install Maj. Gen. Eduardo Lonardi as provisional president after a four day revolt. Peace accord announced with unconditional surrender demanded, amid gunfire and street unrest in Buenos Aires as junta takes control and secures the capital.
The British navy said an unidentified Nationalist Chinese warship fired on the 2,158 ton British freighter Helikon as it neared Foochow Red China. No casualties or damage were reported. Helikon sailed from Shanghai with coal for Foochow and is owned by Wo Fat Sing Co of Hong Kong.
Princess Virginia Ira Fuerstenberg aged 15 wed Prince Alfonso Hohenlohe-Langeburg aged 31 in Venice after vows at the Church of St. Sebastian. The couple rode away in a gondola to a grand reception and plan a Paris motor trip then Niagara Falls honeymoon.
