Brownsdale School Board unanimously urged Dist 38 voters to approve a merger with Austin at Tuesday’s election. The board warned that rejection would bring tremendous cost and effort to place about 80 students without a high school.
A Jordanian military source said 21 soldiers were killed wounded or missing after an Israeli raid on a police post at Gharandal in southern Jordan. A force of 1,000 Israelis used heavy weapons and three planes. Truce observers and UN officials were notified as Jordan lodged a formal complaint.
Bank and five Local 9 members rejected two motions about USI on the October agenda, one to rescind a stance opposing collections at the plant and one to rescind a neutral position. Frank Schultz says the union remains neutral but urges generous contributions. the board and membership oppose plant solicitation and note USI has been properly conducted and funds distributed satisfactorily.
In Clay Kentucky a third Black child enrolled at the Clay school despite the attorney general's opinion that the Negroes were illegally enrolled. The 590 white students continued their boycott as Adj. Gen. J J B Williams escorted James Gordon 10 Teresa Gordon 8 and Bobbie Copeland 12 into the building. Webster County schools chief Wilbur Collins said the board would issue a policy and likely reject integration this year. Guardsmen at Clay noted 200 of 500 detachment members were given weekend passes.
Triple M Farm of Elkton topped Berkshire boars with champion and reserve, while Ernest Dammann and son Myron posted a strong day at the National Barrow Show. McGuire Hampshire Farms Wisner Neb earned first purebred truck lot, Milo Wolrab Mt. Vernon Iowa took second, and other winners included Lor en Peterson Dunnell Minn and Arnold Untiecht Jackson Minn. Judging continued with 48 crossbred pens and 30 purebreds entered as awards and carcass contests neared final announcements.
Ruth Latham, 51, missing from San Diego, was found nude and shocked beside a desert road near Coyote Wells. San Diego sheriff arrested Beatrice Winn, 51, and Lucille M. Wisenand, 36, on suspicion of kidnapping and attempted murder after Latham identified a Mexican woman who helped abduct her. Latham reported being beaten and drugged and kept on desert rocks before rescue.
In Harrisburg Stevenson declares a part time presidency with Nixon wielding party power. He criticizes Eisenhower's health and says the future GOP leaders will be Nixon, accusing the cabinet of serving big business and pledging a businessman’s government.
Unofficial returns show the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party leading the Republican Party by 1,742 votes in Minnesota's primary. An Itasca County error shorted Gov Freeman by 1,200 votes, boosting DFL totals as northern counties reported late. Ancher Nelsen leads Freeman 281,635 to 268,605 in the governor race with Freeman facing three opponents. The State canvassing board will finalize the counts on September 25.
25,000 meat packing workers will strike at 40 Swift and Co plants starting Thursday at 12 01 a m. Contracts talks were recessed and unions said 85,000 members authorized a strike against 110 plants of six firms while negotiations continue with Armour Wilson Cudahy John Morrell and Co and Hygrade Food Products Corp.
The Northern Great Lakes Area Council blamed bad weather and midweek holidays for reduced 1956 tourist activity in Minnesota Wisconsin Michigan and Ontario. A steel strike also contributed to the lower vacation business across the region while the council held its fall meeting.
Northern States Power Co announces sale of its Brainerd gas distribution system to Minnesota Valley Natural Gas Co. The move transfers ownership and operations of the local gas network to the acquiring utility.
Ancher Nelsen, Republican governor candidate, urged a restrained, experienced administration and warned against DFL pledges that falter. He criticized Gov Freeman’s platform as vote seeking and supported right to work opposition and education funding Amendment No 3. He touted mental health gains under Youngdahl and pledged fair, honest leadership. Freeman campaigned on the Iron Range.
Jesse Moore a 41 year old Pryor Oklahoma farmer starts Thursday with his son Lloyd 21 and daughter Dorothy 15 for a four year horseback trek to Mexico and beyond. They travel light with two pack horses and their own mounts. Moore seeks to meet people study customs and spread goodwill. Mrs Moore stays at home recalling Alaska bear survival.
The White House said President Eisenhower will address the farm issue in Peoria Illinois on September 5 at Bradley University field house. Vice President Nixon will receive a personal sendoff before departing on a 15 000 mile 32 state campaign tour from Washington National Airport. Adlai Stevenson aimed at Nixon as the Democrats main target in Harrisburg Pennsylvania Thursday night.
