Heavy rains in the Cedar River watershed pushed a four foot rise in the Cedar River around Dreisner park area and near East Allegheny street. Flooding remained limited to the park zone while homes watched from a short distance and total rainfall for the month reached 27.33 inches.
In Frankfurt Germany American authorities allowed 86 Czechs stranded on a so called freedom train to return to Czechoslovakia if they wish. They are in U S army custody with orders to arrange repatriation. Twenty five others including the train's engineer were involved in the plot. the high commission granted them political asylum.
Washington reports college students will keep draft deferments for the next academic year. Assistant Secretary of Defense Anna Rosenberg noted the program may be tightened as military manpower tightens toward the bottom of the barrel in the following year.
About 400 people at Grand Central Terminal jeered Russia's delegation to the San Francisco peace treaty conference. Soviet deputy foreign minister Andrei A. Gromyko headed the 40 member entourage. when asked for comment he replied with a single word, nothing.

J Frank Williams an RFC examiner testified he was not pressed by William M Boyle Jr or Gabrielson to approve loans to American Lithofold Corp in St Louis. Williams said he does not know Boyle and identified Max Siskind and E Merl Young as associates.
MIT in Cambridge suspends Dirk J Struik from all duties following an indictment on charges of advocating overthrow of US and Massachusetts governments by force. The May 1 1948 speech and writings are cited. Others named include Harry E Winner Martha N Fletcher and Margaret Gilbert but no charges against the women. President James R Killian says the action follows policy.
A police car hit another vehicle while forcing a third car to the curb at Mill and Greenwich Wednesday. Patrolman L. D. Stephens overtook a car that ran a stop sign, causing a collision with Gladys J. Wells of San Francisco. Police car damage was $25 and Wells' car $50. The third auto was ticketed for running a stop sign.
An Austin area man Sgt Robert K Pollitt of Spring Valley is due to arrive in San Francisco from Japan today aboard the transport Gen William Weigel. Other southern Minnesota servicemen abroad include Sfc Arthur J Cahill of Ja ngsville Cpl Anton W Boraski of Mankato and Sgt John K McGovern of Rochester.
Former bookmaker Harry Gross was arrested again after a fugitive stretch at the Atlantic City races. His $25,000 bail was forfeited when he walked away from police custody on Long Island. District Attorney Miles McDonald returned to Atlantic City for a key witness as Gross claimed a simple stroll in the sun.
Joyce Grinhaugh a 1949 Austin high graduate and WAF squadron choice for the queen of the air force aid carnival in California is introduced with a Hawaiian touch. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Chris Grinhaugh of 1209 Elmer and received orchid leis flown by Pan American Airways from Hawaii. Grinhaugh works as a clerk typist in the base flight surgeon office at Travis Air Force Base California for two years.

Bibby led individuals with 380 of 400 points. University of Nebraska won team honors with 2697 of 3000. Charles City Iowa and Jackson Minn led regional efforts in veteran's judging and top individual placings.
U N forces gained a commanding peak northeast of Kumhwa in under three hours with light Red resistance. Earlier, allied troops captured another peak and seven ridges in the same area. An allied officer noted a definite decrease of Red strength in the sector near the Iron Triangle assembly area.
The sheriff reports complaints that the Root River near Sargeant is being contaminated by unknown individuals killing dogs and tossing their carcasses into the water. Sheriff Albert Reinartz warns violators face prosecution under contamination laws.

U S Fifth Air Force reports three Mig-15 fighters shot down a U S Army F-51 Mustang during a bomb run over northwest Korea. The MiG-15s decisively outmatched the propeller driven Mustang with no chance of survival for the pilot.
Two young Mower County farmers James Helgeson and Edwin Meyer earned near top premiums in the National Barrow show Durocs judging this morning. Helgeson 19 and Meyer 23 both first time entrants competed among 45 exhibitors with 330 animals. James won second place in breeding and Meyer third. Anderson Bros. of Altoona Iowa swept the Duroc market classes with two lightweight barrows finishing one two in their class.
