A seething blaze at Spindle Top in Beaumont Texas has destroyed waste oil tracks ignited tanks and set off explosions. Reports say 410 producing wells may be affected as tanks burn and oil spreads across the field with fire departments rushing to contain it before daylight. Rescue and communication crews face danger as fires threaten the Keith Ward tract and surrounding wells.
Fresh stock arrived this week with Crystals Snow Flake Fancy Mel rose Cheviots Kersey and other fall shades now on display at the shop.
Reports from Chicago indicate the Consolidated Meat Interests merger will go into active operation on September 27. The accord may create an industrial giant second only to the steel trust, with plans to control packing houses stockyards and by products nationwide and to absorb allied industries.
Milwaukee reports the National Stock Exhibitors' union was organized at the state fair grounds with about seventy five exhibitors signing the articles. London reports a blue book on Indian trade showing imports at 336,666,665 dollars for the year, up 30 million from the prior year, and exports at 440,000,000 dollars, up 60 million.
Senor Vincente Valdes editor of a Spanish weekly paper is convicted of libelling Dr Paro de Tavera a native member of the Philippine commission and sentenced to six months imprisonment plus a 2000 dollar fine.
Manila business leaders organize to press for limited Chinese immigration to the Philippines. A memorial and possible Washington delegation are planned as the Philippine Commission may endorse the proposal to admit limited Chinese labor due to scarce workers and high wages.
The queen of the Belgians, Marie Henriette, suffered a severe asthma attack in Spa Belgium on September 12 and a physician was hurried from Brussels. She has endured heart trouble for a long time with little recent improvement reported last month.
In St Joseph Missouri on September 12 Senator Berry delivered a fiery speech at a reunion of ex Confederates arguing Jefferson Davis was a traitor and praising Confederate soldiers for valor. He contrasted Union troops noting better arms and numbers but acknowledged their overall triumph.
The three national printing trades conventions in Atlantic City end with officer elections. Edward Stern of Philadelphia is named president while William Green of New York becomes first vice president and Edwin Freegard of St. Louis takes the secretary post. Thomas E. Donnelly of Chicago is named treasurer.
Morace Boies was named as the Third district Democratic nominee for Congress in Dubuque Iowa on September 12. The convention did not adopt a platform, Boies described as a platform in himself and he will outline the campaign issues in his acceptance letter.
Tillamook Oregon on September 12 reports forest fires reaching the timber near the town. The entire population fights the blaze to prevent destruction of the town. Four farmhouses destroyed and heavy ashes and smoke cover the area.
Baltimore September 12 The torpedo boat destroyer Worden with Bainbridge during standardization trials on the Barrens island course proved her speed by reaching 30.50 knots in one leg of the trial.
In Chattanooga Tennessee on September 12 the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen debated founding a home for the indigent of every labor organization. The group cited previous pledges by the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen and the Order of Railway Conductors, each contributing $5 000, as a likely example for their own convention.
In Shenandoah Pennsylvania on September 12 members of Company K Eighth regiment from St Clair fought with deputies at Indian Ridge colliery. Officers had placed several soldiers in the guardhouse after a clash as the soldiers reportedly hurled insults at deputies who pursued them to the camp. Nearly all of Company K are said to be strikers.
Ogden Utah Sept 12 Republican state convention nominates Joseph Howell for congress and Judge William McCarty for supreme court. Platform omits Cuban reciprocity after bitter debate led by Sutherland supporters and aided by church figures. Beveridge speech moved to night amid hostility from beet sugar faction.
The North Western Telephone Co reports its long distance lines and connections extend to over 2,000 cities and towns across Minnesota North and South Dakota Iowa and Wisconsin. Copper metallic circuits provide first class service with low rates.
The Texas Republican convention adjourned after a two day session with two nominations made Governor George P. Burkitt and treasurer Eugene Nolte. Delegates supported Roosevelt and McKinley’s death was deplored while R H R Green was authorized to supervise Texas campaigns for two years.
The New York Herald editorial page proposes a 1904 anti trust presidential ticket with Theodore Roosevelt of New York for President and George Dewey of Vermont for Vice President. The suggestion appears in a Sept 12 publication.
President Mitchell has received a 1000 pound draft from Welsh miners for American miners. The donation was presented at a Welsh miners meeting held earlier in Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania.
