Portland report says Charles Bailey a teamster shot and killed his wife and her twelve year old daughter Rhoda Bailey before fatally shooting himself. The couple had been living apart with the wife supporting themselves and child through laundry work. Bailey, multiple drinks in him, went to his wife's home and carried out the murders and suicide.
Santiago reports a massive snow avalanche on Sept 4 near Jun cal in the Andes buried fifty people alive and destroyed the Chilean customs house on the Argentine frontier.
A fatal shooting and stabbing affray occurred on a westbound Milwaukee train near Andover, South Dakota. William Walde, from Minneapolis, was shot and died. Ed Gilmour was arrested and suspected of stabbing. Conflicting witness accounts describe who fired first, who wielded the weapon, and whether the wounded man also acted in self defense.
In Chicago on September 6 George Cook, a married man, shot and killed Elizabeth Lieenfeld, nineteen, after she refused his attentions, then killed himself. Two weeks earlier Cook's wife had left town for a vacation. They had spent time together at amusements, and after Miss Lieenfeld learned of his marriage she ended the relationship. He waited outside a candy store on North Leavit Street Thursday night and fired twice at her head before turning the gun on himself.
Lewis Sells aged sixty five died in Columbus on Thursday night after a weeklong illness from Bright's disease. He belonged to the Sells brothers quartet that owned the Sells brothers circus, later merging with Adam Forepaugh's show in 1899.
In Bellingham on September 6, a mob attacked Hindu and Sikh residents, beating men in mills and forcing hundreds to flee toward the Canadian border. Police were overwhelmed, many injured, with 400 jailed and 759 Indians reportedly headed for Canada. the British subject status of Hindus is noted.
In San Francisco on September 6 a riot in the Mission district broke out as Structural Iron Workers returning from a funeral disturbed the area at Guerrero and Sixteenth. Cars had windows broken, armed crews fired in the air, and five men were arrested. Motorman Delphi faced charges for carrying a weapon, a passenger was injured by a stone, and police quickly restored order with traffic resumed.
Bodies of a man and a girl were found in the Mississippi river Thursday in Muscatine. Clasped in each other’s arms, their identities could not be established. Police are undecided whether the deaths were accidental or a self inflicted embrace.
Milwaukee reporting on the general grand chapter session notes the plan to publish the ritual. Officers elected include Mrs. Ella S Biburn of Racine as most worthy grand matron W H Norris of Iowa as most worthy grand patron and Mrs. Lorraine J Pittkin as right worthy grand secretary.
The Watson and Co brokerage firm on the New York Stock and Produce exchanges and Chicago Board of Trade failed. W. Frank Newell named assignee. offices to be reviewed. The firm had major grain and railroad stock interests with Duluth Minneapolis Fargo and Winnipeg offices.
The Hague Sept 6 American delegate Joseph H Choate urged the conference to establish a permanent court of justice despite quarrels over judge allotment He proposed elections by states to ensure equal sovereignty A committee including Choate Scott von Bieberstein Bourgeois Nelidoff Tornielli Merry von KaposHerey and Barboza will study judge allotment The court’s judges will be paid 2400 yearly plus 40 per day for service Nelidoff convened plenary session for Sept 7
In Hartford City Indiana on September 6 a buggy carrying Mrs. Robert Gueseman age forty daughter Gretta age eighteen and son Frank age twenty was struck by a fast Lake Erie and Western train just east of the city. The collision caused instant death for all three with the husband and father identifying the victims at the morgue.
