Touch of Autumn Felt in Midwest and Nation

The Associated Press reports a fall-like air across northern Midwest and northwest regions with clear skies and temperatures dropping into the 30s and 40s. Readings were 10 to 20 degrees cooler than a day earlier in the upper Mississippi Valley while most other areas had 60s and 70s, and 80s in the South.

Earthquake rattles Eureka area without reported damage

An earthquake struck near Eureka at 10 17 am PDT with no damage estimates reported. In London a Home Office spokesman rejected a Washington claim that spy Robert A Soblen may be deported to the United States today. In Berlin the United States Britain and France protested Soviet MiGs in air corridors and three Soviet armored cars moved into West Berlin for a war memorial ceremony.

U S Defense Dept Probes Soviet U2 Over Sakhalin Claim

A Defense Department spokesman said the department is investigating a Soviet complaint that a U2 reconnaissance plane flew over Sakhalin Island last Thursday. He said the situation is not known yet and noted ongoing questions about whether U2 flights over Soviet territory remain banned after the Powers case. The White House offered no immediate comment.

Funeral Services Planned for E Ray Cory and Wife

Funeral services are set for Wednesday for E Ray Cory 70 insurance executive and longtime Minnesota Automobile Association president and his wife Daisy 61 who died in a Hastings area crash while returning from a safety council meeting Cory was a driving safety advocate, AAA officer and public official with a long career in insurance and civic groups. The couple were killed when Corys 1962 Cadillac was struck near Highways 95 and 61. Corys sister hosted their Stillwater stay. Daisy Cory died after a hospital convulsion hours after the crash. Cory held Minnesota auto license No 1 and drove no more, preferring the bus. Relationship details and burial plans are noted.

No One Killed on Labor Day in Minnesota

Minnesota reports no fatalities during Labor Day, ending a weekend with 12 deaths across Saturday and Sunday. The latest victim, 83 year old Mrs Selma Roggeman of Robbinsdale, died in Shakopee hospital from injuries after a crash near Victoria. A Faribault man is being questioned in the hit and run death of 63 year old Mrs Emily Marier of Hugo. The weekend toll brings Minnesota to 412 fatalities versus 470 last year.

Hog deliveries light at Hormel plant check points

NFC members manning three plant entrance checkpoints reported very light hog and cattle deliveries at the Geo A Hormel live stock station after a holiday. Estimates from 8 am to noon placed hogs at about 240 and cattle at 35 at the north gate, with other points noting overall subdued traffic and observers saying holding actions were in effect to pressure processors.

Faribault Boy Drowns While Swimming on North Dakota Farm

Curtis Bauer 16 of Faribault Minnesota drowned while swimming with a 14 year old cousin on a farm pond near Scranton North Dakota. Curtis disappeared after diving to retrieve an inner tube and was found in 16 feet of water by volunteers. His mother arrived a hour later to take his body home.

93 Missiles Sent for Japan Defense

The first shipment of Nike Ajax antiaircraft missiles and launchers for Japanese forces arrived at Yokohama, to be deployed at four bases around Tokyo, based on an announcement by the Japanese Defense Agency.
