Castro to recognize Red China and sever U.S. ties

Fidel Castro announced in Havana that Cuba will establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China, tear up the 1952 Cuba-U.S. mutual defense treaty, and break with Chiang Kai-shek’s regime. City Plans $380000 Bond Sale for Street Improvements

Predict 460 Traffic Deaths Labor Day Weekend Toll Rise

The National Safety Council estimated 460 traffic deaths could occur during the 78 hour Labor Day weekend from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday. The forecast cites more cars on the road, longer trips, and a surge in unskilled drivers as key factors. The AP survey notes 389 nonholiday weekend fatalities and compares year to year records, with overall holiday tolls peaking at 884 in 1956.

Students Return as Tony Dietrich Misses First Day

The Austin area prepares for school reopening Tuesday with Tony Dietrich a 13 year old Ellis Junior High eighth grader who will be tutored at home for at least a month after a left eye injury from a cartridge explosion on August 19. His mother Mrs Hermann Dietrich said tutors would be provided and doctors noted potential surgery in the future.
