Murder Suspected in Anoka Railroad Tragedy

Deputy Sheriff Murdered Near Park Rapids Minn

The body of Deputy Sheriff John L. Hoffman was found on a railway track near Park Rapids Minnesota with a bullet wound and a head wound. An inquest ruled murder. bartender French Bosk, the first to report the death, is under arrest and denies guilt. Hoffman's wife and children survive him. Both Hoffman and Bosk lived in Akeley.

Georgia mob lynches accused assailant in Monticello

John Brown a negro accused of attempting to assault Jennie Chaffin, a seventeen year old girl, was captured after his crime. A justice of the peace ordered his commitment but a surrounding mob overpowered the deputy and hanged Brown, riddling his body with bullets in the woods.
