Common Market Britain reject U S monetary settlement plan

European Common Market nations and Britain rejected a U.S. compromise to settle the currency crisis. The U S offered to drop a 10 percent import surcharge if Group of Ten members revalued currencies, including a 20 percent upward move for the yen, 15 percent for the mark, with talks proceeding under Volcker and Connally amid pressure to realign exchange rates and remove the surcharge.

House Senate reach reforms on campaign media spending

Lawmakers move toward spending limits on political ads with a 10 cent per eligible voter cap and a six cent cap for broadcasting. The clause preserving the equal time rule Section 315 remains, as lawmakers vote to require neutrality in ad space and air time while noting no requirement to accept political ads.

300 Viet troops launch incident in Cambodia

About 300 South Vietnamese paratroopers made a new thrust 20 miles east of Cambodia landing by helicopter southeast of Dam Be. U S B52 bombers and fighter bombers softened the area beforehand and initial contact was without resistance. Dam Be has been a major supply depot for North Vietnamese attacks along Highway 7 and forays into South Vietnam. Other paratroopers moved within 10 miles of Chaprubber plantation believed to be North Vietnamese 9th Division headquarters as mortar fire hit positions. Minor clashes reported with no major offensive changes in eight days of fighting along Route 7.

Farm system can mix large and family farms says Ag official

Don Paarlberg of the U S Agriculture Department told the National Milk Producers Federation convention that a partly large scale and partly family farm system is feasible. He cited research credit cooperation and modern tech as keys and noted legal tools exist to curb rapid shifts to large farms. He called it a major policy issue for the coming decade.

Woman stabs two teachers in kindergarten classroom

In San Francisco a woman entered Hillcrest School and stabbed two teachers with an ice pick. Rosemary Hardy, 34, surrendered to police and was booked on two counts of attempted murder. Hoskey, 39, underwent stomach surgery and received neck and chest wounds. Bayerle, 35, treated for eye and facial injuries.

Birth control boutique in Chapel Hill draws attention

The Adam and Eve shop near the UNC campus bills itself as America’s first birth control boutique and opened Nov. 17. It sells nonprescription contraceptives, books on sex and planning, and offers a low-cost pregnancy test service. Backers plan expansion despite anticipated criticism.

Nixon to visit China in February 1972

President Nixon will travel to Beijing beginning February 21, 1972, for talks with Chinese leaders in what officials call a very busy working visit. White House plans include further technical arrangements and multiple allied summit meetings ahead of the Peking trip.

$160 Million Plan to Cut Crime in Eight Cities

The Nixon administration plans a $160 million program in eight mid sized cities to reduce violent street crime and burglary by 20 percent in five years. The Justice Department will award funds over two and a half fiscal years to bolster police patrols and court improvements.

Spannaus to issue ruling on Minnesota studded tire law

Minnesota Attorney General Warren Spannaus said he will issue a formal opinion soon to clarify the lingering confusion over studded tires. Lawmakers did not renew the statute that allowed studs since 1965, leading judges to interpret legality through December 31. He indicated enforcement agencies using a May 1 expiration should await the ruling.
