U S commanders face questions after a crushing eighth army defeat in northwest Korea. Critics say faulty intelligence and underestimating Oriental infantry and the Chinese army helped produce the setback. Front line officers warned earlier than Tokyo about enemy strength. estimates rose from 100000 to over 260000 as the retreat continued.
A man nicknamed Dangerous Dan, described as carrying a bulged pocket like a gun, threatened a target and was confronted by patrons. Police traced him through four taverns and booked him on a drunkenness charge after finding a fancy western pistol in his possession.
The CIO United Steel Workers accepted an average 16 cents an hour raise for 165000 US Steel employees. Prices will rise about 5 to 42 percent due to higher labor costs. The increase lifts average earnings to 1.88 dollars per hour and may set patterns for about a million workers.
A district court jury ordered Roger Brand and his father Edward Brand to pay 5600 to Clifford Ness of Rushford for the death of his son Allen, 20, in a three vehicle crash 314 miles northwest of Rushford on December 23, 1949. The elder Ness sought 10000 plus reimbursements. two other defendants were absolved. Judge Martin A. Nelsonoversaw the case with the jury deliberating about 11 1/2 hours.
Ambassador Wellington Koo said 33 000 Chinese Nationalist troops Chiang Kai-shek offered for Korea remain available to United Nations forces. The offer, refused by Gen. Douglas MacArthur on Formosa grounds, still stands and was not pressed at the meeting with Dean Rusk.
Police Chief George Roope invited an investigation after Frank Schultz Local CIO president presented 29 rumors and charges to the police civil service commission. Mayor M G Rolfson and the police commission said they would welcome inquiry as discussion covered Richard Kelly case and other rumors about department conduct.

Eighty thousand Chinese Reds attack UN forces in northeast Korea as Maj Gen Almond reports six to ten divisions pressing the 10th Corps. In the northwest, 200,000 Red Chinese threaten Walton Walker’s forces amid a cut supply line at Changjin reservoir. Marines and infantry are encircled near Yudam, with elements of the fifth and seventh Marine regiments under heavy attack while supply routes to Hamhung face blockage. Quiet returns to much of the front as UN forces retreat to a narrower line.
President Truman said UN forces will not back down in Korea and that the atom bomb could be used if necessary. He stressed final decision rests with field commanders but affirmed presidential approval is required, and outlined steps to strengthen defense and mobilize atomic energy.
Governor Youngdahl asked housing director Stuart Rothman to prepare a state emergency rent control law for early 1951 consideration. He said federal action may reshape policy, while stressing the need to prevent disruption and protect public welfare with full landlord-tenant adjustments. Rothman noted city controls may continue beyond December 31, 1950 if needed.

He carried the Minnesota flag after earning a swine breeding honor that earned him a trip to the National 4-H Congress. West coast transmitters are used to give full coverage on United Nations developments. Seven transmitters were turned over to the UN for several hours, with two relay transmitters at Honolulu increasing power.
Firemen kept watch all night over a grain elevator after a dust explosion at the Archer Daniels Midland plant injured three workers. The blast near flax cleaning machines at Malcol m Street and 29th Avenue Southeast caused rekindling four hours later with 16 fire units returning. The injured were Julius Seha Cecil Bowley and George Evans, reported in good condition. walls bulged but about 30,000 bushels of flax nearby were undamaged.
London reports stray ice blocks falling on southern England over three weeks. Air Secretary Arthur Henderson said experts ruled out freak hail and described the incidents as baffling. One chunk shattered a Wandsworth garage roof with a two foot hole last Friday.
