James J. Hill, railroad executive, rejects a newspaper report that he predicted a severe downturn for the industry. He asserts he did not make such a pessimistic forecast and defends his public statements as misrepresented.
In St Paul James J Hill chairman of Great Northern Railway denied the published interview claiming a general business decline. His private secretary released a typed statement saying the interview did not occur and that conditions are not alarming though activity is not strong. A New York paper had questioned him about a Washington statement related to the Moffat tunnel.
Washington reports Taft will include both progressives and regulars in White House councils. He luncheoned with Speaker Cannon and James R. Mann to discuss the legislative agenda. Cannon and others doubt substantial legislation will pass beyond normal supply bills, yet Taft plans a fairly long program in his message.

Waterloo Iowa November 30 Mrs F S Robinson indicted for setting fire to farm buildings owned by herself and husband near Janesville on Labor Day. Her husband was indicted with her and convicted by a jury. Trial likely in district court this week.
Senator Eugene Hale of Maine, Republican Senate leader and appropriations chair, expects limited action in the coming short session. He foresees only routine appropriation bills and perhaps a few measures such as apportionment and ocean mail bounty. He predicts no tariff legislation and says the president’s program may be suggested but not forced.
Pepin Wisconsin November 29 Pete Carlson a farmer living near Lund ten miles from Pepin committed death by own action. Carlson owned several farms and had money but was mentally unbalanced for some time. Sent to Menomena asylum then returned authorities found him hanging by a rope in a cow barn after hours of search life extinct for several hours

Douglas testified before a congressional committee that steamship lines owned abroad dominate U.S. shipping and spent freely to sway opinion against the American merchant marine. He cited foreign rate setting from Hamburg to export cargo and influence through articles and agents, noting no clear law violation but urging caution.
Willie Hoppe broke the world high run mark with 155 points in a match against Joseph Mayer, amateur champion of Philadelphia, surpassing his own previous record of 150 set four weeks earlier in New York.
