The government reports the index of leading economic indicators declined for October for the second straight month, signaling a possible slowdown. Four of eleven indicators fell, led by total liquid assets, with five indicators rising and two unchanged.
United Nations Security Council meets to renew the Golan Heights peacekeeping mandate amid fears Israel may renounce Middle East peace resolutions if altered. Syrian sources say Hafez al Assad agrees to an extension, while Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin warns against changing wording of resolutions 338 242 or the invitation letter to the Geneva conference.
Mutinous leftists resist at paratroop base Tancos near Lisbon with 1,500 rebels said to be inside. Faro 4th Infantry and Lagos base commanders refuse orders as socialist and PPD activists press for obedience. Air force chief offers amnesty to enlisted men while martial law limits are broadcast in Lisbon.
Lynette Fromme, a Charles Manson follower, is found guilty of attempting to assassinate President Ford. The jury, sequestered for three weeks, asked for no publicity and faced a prior deadlock during 19½ hours of deliberation. Sandra Good warned of violence against critics of the Manson cult.
The Minnesota Public Service Commission ordered Interstate Power Company to roll back pre existing Minnesota rates, yielding an annual $141,854 reduction. Albert Lea customers face a $139,454 rate shift plus a $9,367 refund from prior bond related rates. The decision sets uniform Minnesota rates and limits various rate base items. Interstate serves 82 towns, 17 unincorporated areas, and 4931 rural customers in Minnesota.
Rains sweeping into the Los Angeles area helped end two major brush fires in the hills north and east of the city. The fires burned about 100 square miles, caused 17.5 million dollars in damage, and displaced 5,600 residents as mop-up began. Officials declared the blazes contained after a cold front brought rain, with seedling rye grass planned to stabilize hillsides as winter storms approach.
Russian Orthodox and Baptist leaders in Nairobi called reports of religious persecution in the Soviet Union exaggerated and distorted. Metropolitan Yuvenaly and four Baptist delegates argued infringements exist but reflect broader moves toward democratic development, while critics Gleb Jakunin and Lev Regelson have long criticized the church and Christian unity.
H Roy Meier of Jackson Missouri was chosen president of the American Angus Association at the 92nd annual Angus delegates meeting in Louisville Kentucky on November 17. He succeeds retiring president William Clark of Houston Texas.
The Postal Service faces a seven million dollar daily deficit but expects the Christmas mailing period to be its busiest yet. Over 9 billion pieces of mail are projected through year end with rate increases from 10 to 13 cents for first class letters and a rush of mass mailings before December 28. Deputy Postmaster General Bolger orders reduced overtime to cut costs while officials promise mail will be cleared by Christmas Eve. Also the holiday period sees a traffic death toll rising past 100 with AP counting 117 deaths by today and NSC predicting 450 to 500 holiday fatalities in traffic accidents.
