Christmas season lights go on along Main Street and nearby areas in downtown Austin after donors from the Chamber of Commerce contributed 25,000 dollars to fund the display. Gary Nemitz of Ne- is involved in the funding effort.
President Nixon nominated astronaut Michael Collins to be assistant secretary of state for public affairs. Collins, 39, will lead public speeches on foreign policy and resign his Air Force commission for the $38,000 yearly post. He helped command the Apollo 11 command module during the moon mission and has six years in the space program.
Accidents during the Thanksgiving holiday have claimed 250 lives by early today. A prominent crash west of Richmond, Virginia killed five people including a minister, his wife and child. The National Safety Council estimates 700 to 800 more may die from 6 pm Wednesday to midnight Sunday. In Maine, William E Tay lor Jr. 26, of Portland, died when his pickup turned over on Route 26. by the time rescue arrived he was gone.
Saigon AP reports U.S. battlefield casualties in nearly nine years reach 300,000, with about half in the 18 months since Paris peace talks began. Light fighting noted. Viet Cong ambush 300 South Vietnamese in Mekong Delta, 36 killed, 12 wounded. U.S. command cites 6,995 American deaths from noncombat causes and ongoing civilian tolls in 1969.
Washington AP defense spending rose to an annual 80.3 billion during July August and September according to the Commerce Department. Assistant Secretary Harold C. Passer said third quarter purchases of goods and services grew 1.8 billion on a seasonally adjusted basis primarily due to a pay hike. Without the 2.5 billion pay raise total would have fallen. Purchases amounted to 8.5 percent of gross national product, unchanged from the prior quarter.
A mortar shell of Egyptian origin damaged a U.N. observation post on the Israeli-occupied side of the Suez Canal. The U.N. report on Israeli Egyptian hostilities dated Thursday notes the incident as part of ongoing border fighting.
Army judge Lt. Col. Reid W. Kennedy says witnesses are defying the no talk order in the My Lai slaying case and will hold a closed session to decide steps. Calley, 26, faces murder charges for 109 Vietnamese civilians killed at My Lai on March 16, 1968, with a general court martial planned. S. Sgt. David Mitchell faces assault with intent to murder amid investigations of 24 soldiers and ex-soldiers.
Yellowstone National Park prepares for a snowmobile influx as heavy snow closes all roads except the Cooke City to Gardiner route. Supt. Jack K. Anderson said the park could exceed last winter’s 9,000 over snow vehicle visitors.
U S and Soviet negotiators wrap two weeks of private arms curb discussions in a favorable mood. They will reconvene next Tuesday at the Soviet Embassy as the SALT talks move toward a broader phase after a long weekend layover and renewed reporting to their governments.

Lodi California AP reports ambulance driver Calvin Helwig often brought a son on calls. On Thanksgiving he and his son responded to a double fatality crash. One victim was Helwig’s 19 year old son Jerry.

AP reports the Chamber of Deputies in Italy approved all articles of a bill to legalize divorce for the first time in Catholic Italy with a full chamber vote anticipated later. Also from AP, Robert J. Brown, 40, UAW Local 41 president, named associate manpower administrator for the U.S. Training and Employment Service in the Labor Department after service in Minnesota agencies.
