The Commerce Department notes a 1.2 percent October upturn in its economic indicators amid a 15 percent surge in housing permit applications to a record 2.2 million annual rate. Three indicators fell while construction wage talks moved ahead with 47 contracts approved. Postal rate hikes of 23.9 percent loom if a key Price Commission ruling does not intervene.

President Nixon will dedicate a $7.5 million 140 bed Palm Desert hospital as the first stage of a planned medical complex honoring Dwight D. Eisenhower. The ceremony includes Eisenhower's widow and a star studded audience after Nixon arrives from the Western White House with Mrs. Nixon.

The Austin City Council passed a Friday resolution asking the Mower County Board to delay selling the Erickson Hardware Store building at 111 3rd Ave NE until a feasibility study for downtown parking can be completed. The owner, S P Elam, faces tax forfeiture and the county may sell unless the city claims the property for public use. Alderson said he protects the owner's investment and will seek reinstatement. he plans to appear before Dec 7. The council also set aside a petition from nine Wildwood Park residents to restrict snowmobiling to daylight hours and away from the playground, referring it to the ordinance committee and Park Board.
