Two Surgeries in Nine Months Glenda Bearbower Story

Glenda Bearbower, nine, from Adams Minnesota, underwent two leg amputations after a February fall led to cancer. She faced a first operation in Rochester Mayo Clinic and a second in November, returning home on crutches and later an artificial limb. Her family relies on community aid and a benefit fund set up at Farmers State Bank of Adams.

Hormel reports 1971 earnings rise to 16.66 million

Nixon may invoke Taft Hartley to end dock strike

President Nixon may invoke the Taft Hartley Act to force East Coast longshoremen back to work amid a 55 day dock strike. Federal mediator counts it a real possibility after talks in Miami Beach. ILA and allied unions say cooling off may be required. 45 000 ILA members plus 30 000 others affected.

Top economic adviser resigns from Council of Economic Advisers

Washington AP. Dr. Paul W. McCracken resigns as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers effective Jan 1. He is replaced by vice chairman Dr. Herbert Stein, an activist economist involved in the wage price freeze and Phase 2 machinery. Stein says policy will be made to work.

GM asks price panel OK for 2.5% price hike

General Motors asks the Price Commission to approve a 2.5 percent rise in 1972 prices for cars trucks and options. Ford boosts its request to 4.4 percent and Toyota raises U S prices again. The Pay Board allows merit raises within ranges and Nixon names a Rent Advisory Board led by Thomas B Curtis.

Nixon Pompidou to meet in Azores before trips

President Nixon will meet French President Georges Pompidou in the Azores on December 13 and 14 to discuss international issues ahead of his China and Moscow visits. He will also meet Portugal’s prime minister Marcelo Caetano during the trip. India says its troops have orders to attack across the Pakistan border in self defense and have done so. Senegal’s President Senghor and Nigeria’s Gowon arrive in Israel on a Middle East peace mission seeking details on borders and guarantees. They traveled from Cairo after Sadat asked Israel to outline withdrawal terms from occupied Arab lands.

Thanksgiving Day Office Closures Announced

All city and county offices will be closed for Thanksgiving. The Geo A Hormel Co and many Austin stores will close as will the Austin Daily Herald and post office deliveries except special items. Mail will be dispatched and placed in boxes at the post office.

China to define role in UN disarmament talks

Ambassador Huang Hua was to address the U N General Assembly outlining China’s future stance on disarmament. He was expected to cover overall approach rather than just the Soviet proposal for a world conference. China has rejected private summit talks and criticized secret deals between Russia and the United States.
