Minnesota road toll rises to 897 in 1971 deaths

The deaths of two St. Paul teenagers in a one car crash Sunday pushed Minnesota's road toll to 897 for 1971. Doreen Cole 18 and John Klingsheim 16 were killed when a car carrying four struck a utility pole and porch. Jeffrey State 22 was in serious condition. another passenger was in satisfactory condition.

Butz Nomination Approved by Senate Panel

The Senate Agriculture Committee approved President Nixon’s nomination of Earl Butz as secretary of agriculture by an 8 to 6 vote. The panel conditioned approval on a blind trust for his agribusiness stocks and a 90 day sale deadline. It limited further agribusiness purchases if confirmed.

Strike at St. Paul Stockyards hits workers nationwide

Stockhandlers walked out across St. Paul Union Stockyards in South St. Paul and five other midwestern yards at 12 01 am. Local 160 of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters says no negotiations are planned while the United Stockyards Co. seeks local bargaining.
