The Air Force recovered a 900 pound space capsule after a test at Santa Rosa Island Florida using a 9 foot drag balloon and para chute. The ballute system from Goodyear slowed the capsule from 1100 mph to subsonic before a parachute lowered it into the Gulf of Mexico test range.
