Federal mediators in Chicago pursue a wage dispute settlement ahead of a Monday 6 am strike deadline. Talks include six shop craft unions, railroads, and the National Mediation Board to avert a nationwide disruption affecting 90 percent of rail traffic as 140,000 workers seek higher pay.
In London at Stones Chop House the dish grits, a Southern U S staple, is served for the first time. French chef Joseph Porta prepares the dish for Miss Elizabeth London a television commentator amid a flood of southern inspired preparation tips received since the announcement.

In Ann Arbor the University of Michigan Medical Center has used fencing for a year as therapy for boys aged 11 to 14 in its psychiatric hospital. Dr. Andrew S. Watson says fencing can raise self esteem and offer a psychologically valid outlet for aggression.
An Air Force sergeant his wife and five children died from carbon monoxide released by a faulty vent in a butane stove. Neighbors reported trouble and on Friday airmen forced entry to the small Sundance house to search for M. Sgt. Russell Schlotterbeck, finding seven bodies.
Roy W. Howard, 81, longtime journalism leader, died of a heart attack Friday night. He chaired Scripps-Howard’s executive committee and helped build the group. He was United Press’s first managing editor and later president. He suffered a collapse at his Park Avenue office and died at Doctors Hospital.
Pope Paul VI and the Second Vatican Council proclaimed three historic decrees on collegiality unity and relations with Eastern Catholic Churches at a grand St Peter's Basilica ceremony attended by 2,000 prelates. The session also advanced the anti Semitism declaration though it will require revisions. a petition for a vote on religious liberty was rejected.
Vice President elect Hubert Humphrey began a back to school swing visiting Minnesota campuses where his sons study. He planned stops at ManKato State College for Robert and Shattuck Military Academy at Faribault for Douglas. He also discussed his successor with Governor Rolvaag and noted Walter Mondale would become his Senate successor.
AP's Eddy Gilmore reports Stone's Chop House in London served its first batch of American Southern fried grits. Chef Joseph Porta prepared the dish for a special lunch as a trial ahead of Thanksgiving. Executive Lewis Moskin calls grits noble and suitable with various foods.
