In Bombay riots flare as police face stone-throwing demonstrators over a plan to create a separate Bombay city state. Five killed and at least 225 wounded with over 1,000 rioters arrested. 200,000 textile workers joined the strike, buses and trains attacked, fires set, and ambulances ferrying the injured.
Joe Groth of 500 Lincoln bagged a 200 pound doe on his first deer hunt in Forestville South of Wykoff as more than 700 hunters began the season. His companions Ivan Sample and George Gilbert of Spring Valley also harvested deer early Saturday. Groth said it was beginner’s luck and noted license costs when he lived in Iowa.
Senator Humphrey defended partisan politics calling it a part of the United States and the framework for different points of view. Speaking at a Saturday forum on Partisan Commitment and Political Morality he argued parties are merely names for contrasting views.
The five nation Baghdad defense alliance meets in Baghdad as Prime Minister Nuri Said vows Iraq will aid any Arab state threatened by Israel. British Foreign Secretary Harold Macmillan attends with Iran Turkey and Pakistan leaders. The pact links Turkey Iraq Iran and Pakistan forming a non Communist security belt from Himalayas to Black Sea. US liaison with the pact noted. The meeting spans two days.
A board of U S Air Force officers flew to Iwo Jima to investigate a C124 Globemaster crash that killed 10 of 11 men aboard. The four engine transport crashed on takeoff from Iwo Jima after ferrying cargo from Tokyo. One survivor was hospitalized in Japan. Names are being withheld.
The 1956 Minnesota deer season begins with three hunters dead in shooting incidents and others wounded. Sigvald Hanson Jr., 18, of Star Lake near Fergus Falls, was fatally shot while hunting in a rifle restriction area. Kenneth Huntley, 26, of Fergus Falls, is held for an inquest after reporting a possible accidental shot. August Felds, 49, of Monticello, was shot near Effie and awaits a preliminary hearing in Grand Rapids.
Airman Marcus Papke of the Sioux City Air Force Base rescued 3 month old Raymond Lee Squibb from a burning apartment as a 3 year old girl, Susan Ann Kelly, died in the blaze started by children playing with matches. Fire officials called Papke's act almost unbelievable.
Merle Schmeiss aged 15 son of Mr and Mrs Dave Schmeiss of near Leith died Sunday in a hospital at Elgin North Dakota from an accidental gunshot wound. He was pheasant hunting near Leith when the gun discharged as he entered his father’s car the bolt struck the car door and the load struck Merle in the chest
Vatican confirms Pope Pius XII saw Jesus Christ beside his bed during a December 1954 downturn in his severe illness. The pope reportedly recited prayers as the vision reassured him his hour had not yet come. Casimiri stated the Vatican authorized release of the account.
President Eisenhower plans privacy meetings with the National Security Council at Camp David to review U S defense policy after the Geneva talks failure and a Democratic critique. Adlai Stevenson, a 1956 hopeful, called foreign policy perilous. Hagerty declined comment on the speech.
In Brookline Massachusetts Dr Paul Dudley White Boston heart specialist noted he could have profited two billion dollars if he had traded on his President Eisenhower illness bulletin He said he did not exploit the situation and spoke at a Temple Emeth gathering about choosing integrity over stock gains.
Marie Dionne, 21, of Callander Ontario, is reported seriously ill with pernicious anemia at Notre Dame l Esperance Hospital in Montreal. Two of the surviving quintuplets Cecile and Yvonne train as nurses there. Her parents traveled from Callander after learning of her illness following earlier health issues and confinement to a religious order.
A Wales to London excursion train derailed near Milton England killing ten people and injuring over one hundred. Rescue teams of more than five hundred recovered bodies and aided survivors through the night. Among the wreckage a six to eight week old baby girl was found alive with minor injuries.
An 11 year old Rochester youth, Gary Dean Shafer, died from injuries after being thrown from a car on State Aid Road 2 near Rochester. The accident left his brother Larry hospitalized, Kranz unharmed, and added to Minnesota’s statewide traffic toll.
Betty Lou Ellefson, 25, survived with serious burns after a midnight fire killed her husband Wallace, 28, and three children Arlette 7 Patricia 6 and Douglas 4 in a log home. She leaped from the porch roof into a snowbank then crawled to a neighbor for help as flames engulfed the house.
Dr. Melvin Barnes reports a survey of 100 Oklahoma City high school juniors found little desire to pursue science or math. Students mocked scientists as squares or old bearded men, called courses dull and costly, and doubted future earnings, though they recognized national demand for scientists. Barnes urged improved vocational counseling and teaching.
