John Foster Dulles named next secretary of state. He plans a cabinet council with ministers without portfolio to direct high level cold war policy. Eisenhower aims to wrest initiative from Russia and coordinate with outgoing Truman administration for a smooth transition.
Hibbing Minnesota John Span ish, a Hibbing village trustee, was convicted by a District Court jury on a felony charge for failing to cooperate with the state public examiner. Sentencing date set by Judge Christ Holm. Span ish had won renomination in the village primary while Joseph Gazelka, the village clerk, awaits sentencing after a Nov. 8 verdict for misappropriating public funds.
Eisenhower designates Harold E. Stassen former Minnesota governor as director of the Mutual Security Agency. George M. Humphrey of Cleveland named secretary of the Treasury and Herbert Brownell Jr. of New York becomes attorney general. Brownell helped lead the Stassen Eisenhower campaign and directed campaign strategy.
Elizabeth Hormel, 93, sister of Geo. A. Hormel founder, died Wednesday in Los Angeles. She was the eldest of 12 and two years older than George A. Hormel. Funeral services expected in Los Angeles. Survived by brothers John Palm Springs Benjamin F Los Angeles Rev Henry Boston and several sisters. Born December 2 1858 in Buffalo New York.
Federal Judge Irving R. Kaufman designated the week of January 12 for the execution of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. The couple, convicted of passing atomic secrets to Russia, were sentenced after a 1951 trial and have remained in Sing Sing Prison's death house while the Supreme Court refused another rehearing.
Bennington township farmer Verland R DeWall about 29 died of strangulation when his clothing caught in a cornpicker on the Robert Ramsey farm seven miles southeast of Grand Meadow. Sheriff and coroner investigated. DeWall survived by wife and six children.
Mrs. John Tenhoff led 10 women on duty at Minneapolis as five planes appeared in close formation at 9 58 a m during a simulated attack over Southern Minnesota. Observers could barely see the aircraft with binoculars and could not confirm whether they were bombers or interceptors.
Washington an application by Wisconsin Central Airlines for authority to serve two routes south from Minneapolis St Paul was studied by hearing examiner James Kieth of the civil aeronautics board. No decision time given. The carrier seeks a Twin Cities Des Moines route via Austin Fort Dodge and Mason City Iowa and a Sioux City route via Mankato Fairmont and Worthington Minnesota.
President elect Eisenhower met with four Republican senators and pressed to finalize cabinet choices. He announced three cabinet posts the day prior: Dulles as secretary of state Wilson as secretary of defense and Oregon Governor McKay as interior secretary.
BRUNSWICK Ga A retired high school English teacher will visit the English homeland of her literary heroes thanks to gifts totaling 2400 from former Glynn Academy pupils after compulsory retirement last June. Miss Jane Macon 70 received the funds to finance the journey.
William Green president of the AFL died at his Coshocton home at age 81. AFL officials said death occurred at 12 22 p m CST from a heart attack. It follows the Nov 9 CIO leader Philip Murray’s death in San Francisco.
Allied infantry and South Korean troops repelled a major Chinese push on Sniper Ridge on the Central Korean Front. U S Sabre jets and fighter-bombers struck targets across North Korea as artillery and armor were driven back. The clash left no Allied ground lost despite heavy fighting and bitter cold.

A new traffic signal on Highway 16 218 began operating Tuesday in Austin. Eastbound drivers turning south on 218 must be in the right lane to use the green arrow, and may complete a right turn on red with caution. Through eastbound traffic must wait for green.
The government reports a one tenth point rise in the cost of living index for the 30 days ending Oct 15. About one million workers in auto and aircraft sectors face a one cent per hour wage cut starting Dec 1 due to contract clauses. The Oct 15 index stood at 190.9, up from 190.8 on Sept 15 and 1.9 percent higher than a year ago.
