Austin School Board announced a 17 percent tax levy reduction for District 492 with the 1971 72 levy set at 3 888 000 from 5 662 528 last year. The mill rate dropped from 232.74 to 191.88, while cash balances were drawn down to cover mandatory costs and anticipated state aid increases.

Support for both nominations remains strong among committee and Senate members.
Three separate accidents raise Minnesota’s highway toll to 863 for 1971, down from 871 last year. Victims include Charles E. White, 985, St. Paul, killed at 5:40 p.m. when struck at a St. Paul intersection by driver John C. Elliott Jr., 41. Rodeney Hahn, 20, Rochester, fatally struck at 6:15 p.m. while crossing a street. driver Robert Nelson, 19, Chatfield, not charged. A Cannon Falls man also among the fatalities.
The Senate Appropriations Committee voted 14 to 10 against withholding Indochina war funds except for the money needed to withdraw U.S. forces. The session signals continued support for wartime financing while pressuring for a rapid exit strategy.
The St Paul Union Stockyards will join five other Midwest yards in a Monday walkout by stock handlers over unresolved contracts. District 4 official Glenn Chiander said formal notification will arrive Friday.
