Congress leaders anticipate a united statement from President-elect Eisenhower and President Truman signaling no deep divisions over U S foreign policy. The two men will discuss world issues and transition plans as Eisenhower prepares to take office January 20.
Navy ensign George McClelland Snyder, disbursing officer on a destroyer, claimed to FBI agents that he squandered about 37500 of 38000 dollars of ship funds on women liquor cars and travel. He vanished from Portsmouth Virginia around October 17 and was arrested in Newport Beach California at a resort hotel.
President-elect Dwight D. Eisenhower will likely announce his position on repatriation of Korean War prisoners after meetings with Truman and GOP leaders. He heads to Washington after a Augusta vacation to confer with Taft Martin Bridges Wiley and discuss policy and transfer of duties to the new Congress.
Denver man Jack Andersen received a crate of a full size racing greyhound from a railway office after a wager at Colorado Springs track. The dog Kay Trump, owned by Clyde O. Means, had failed to finish well in a race. Andersen and his wife later courted the dog and kept it at home, surprising him with the animal.
The Supreme Court refused to grant a hearing to Julius and Ethel Rosenberg for a second time, clearing the way for the government to seek an execution date. Morton Sobell also saw his bid denied. The couple, in Sing Sing’s death house for 19 months, face possible execution unless the president commutes their sentence.
The battered body of 21 year old John H Tallmadge of Wauwatosa Wisconsin was recovered on Hallet Peak near Estes Park Colorado after a four month disappearance. He was a Marquette University student on a vacation trip when he vanished. A search party of mountain climbers found the remains on the south side about 1000 feet below the summit.
Forty three forestry students from Burma, China, India, Indonesia, Indo China, Malaya, Pakistan and North Borneo undertake a six month course in mechanized logging operations in Manila.
A pickup carrying eleven youths overturned three times west of Winona injuring and killing five people. Victims include Joann Vankirk 17 Lorraine Neale 18 and Ardith Smith 18 all Rochester residents. In Butte Montana a man claiming employment with a local firm tried to establish credit at a rooming house cafe and business. Judge John Seton granted him free room and board for 60 days.
