Hunter Found After Three Days Missing In Muskeg Wilderness
Earl Sommerville, 48, of Renville Minn., missing since Sunday while grouse hunting 40 miles southwest of International Palls, was found about 8 am. He was in good condition and carried a .22 rifle with him. Sommerville survived three nights, built fires, and enlisted a search of about 50 rangers and forestrymen. He saw planes but could not reach a clearing to signal.

R O Schmidt a 48 year old grain buyer in Kearney Nebraska claimed he saw a space ship with four men and two women aboard. He described a moving floor crew spoke mixed languages and one man resembled a hotel acquaintance. Officers found footprints and an oil spot. Schmidt’s car had the same oil. He remained firm as police pursued the tale overnight and said the ship vanished after he left.

U S Moonwatch teams scanned the skies hoping to spot Russia’s second Sputnik. Officials notified 105 Moonwatch units to observe during dawn passes as Sputnik II could be seen over the East Coast Midwest and Far West with additional passes planned. Dr Fred L Whipple of the Smithsonian Observatory noted sightings from Japan Austria California Arizona England and Ecuador and said Sputnik II appears as bright as Sputnik I but orbit data remain imprecise.
