Austin police crowded with youths taken to the station as eggs cucumbers and rotten tomatoes were hurled from cars. Officers logged heavy radio traffic and 12 parents reported their children after a night of prankish activity and alleged offenses.
Vandals worked in Brainerd from 7 p.m. to 1 30 a.m. opening hydrants flood streets setting fires at intersections and to two outhouses one on Brainerd High School lawn and another on Lincoln grade school boulevard. An 18 year old was jailed then released with orders to name accomplices and cover damages.
ST. PAUL Non farm employment in Minnesota rose by 11 100 from a year earlier the Minnesota Department of Employment Security reported. The September total was 951 818 up 12 400 from August with October expected to show a seasonal drop. Average weekly earnings for production workers were 82 59 with iron ore and metal miners earning 105 77 a week up 6 32 from last September.
Loretta an 11 year old girl in a wheelchair received Halloween treats from FHA girls at 808 Nicholson. Neighbors also visited with goodies while police noted a rise in mischief but little vandalism. Detective Bob Nelson said downtown noise marked a lively Halloween with no serious incidents.

President Eisenhower will deliver the first in a planned nationwide series of talks to boost confidence in American science and defense. The Oklahoma City address, a 30 minute program at 9 30 p m CST, will focus on Science and security.
A coroner’s jury ruled that bus driver Ernest Clarke Dexter failed to keep doors closed until traffic stopped and that Roy Gallagher failed to stop for the school bus, contributing to the death of 8 year old Ronald Rustan near Dexter farm on October 22. The verdict sets the stage for criminal charges in municipal court.
Le Roy-Ostrander voters will decide an $800000 bond issue on November 9 to finance a new Ostrander three classroom building with multi purpose room kitchen library and offices and a Le Roy gym addition with swimming pool plus remodeling of Le Roy grade and high schools. The plan includes a 25.2 mill annual tax and adjusted non resident tuition. Moody and Springsted and Ellerbe and Co. serve as bond consultants and architects respectively.
The U N General Assembly halted its bitter Middle East debate as Syria agreed not to press for action. Syria consented to rest the matter without a vote, part of a formula to avoid a showdown over U N inquiry and Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold. The rival seven nation sponsors likewise agreed not to seek a vote.

Austin ranks 41st of 48 cities seeking federal aid for a 2.5 million sewage disposal project. City officials, including George Dugan and Rog er Nelson, met Minnesota officials to discuss prospects and noted Austin’s high per capita income and high mill rate may hurt eligibility. In Minneapolis a 17 year old boy was wounded by a police rifle bullet after teens fled a broken Fanny Farmer candy store window near the University of Minnesota campus. Detective Captain Hawkinson said Patrolman Verne Fuehrer fired once as the youths fled. the wounded youth Joseph Baillargeon was hospitalized in fair condition. Three other youths were held for questioning.
A 17 year old Austin High School senior Donald Burdine died at St Olaf Hospital five hours after being found slumped over his bed with a .22 rifle across his legs. County coroner H M Fisch said cause of death injuries may be accidental or self defense related. He is survived by his parents two sisters and two grandparents. Funeral set for 2 p m at the Methodist Church with interment at Oakwood.

The Twin Cities Arsenal will stop producing .30 caliber cartridges by month end, cutting about 1,700 of 1,850 civilian workers, with 145 on skeleton maintenance by May 1958 and eight government staff retained. The Army cites impracticality of continuing operations despite NATO shell needs. Federal Cartridge plans staged layoffs of 300 in November and 300 in December.
