The city readies a Memorial Day parade with five musical units and over 600 marchers. No formal speeches planned. after the parade ends at Kenwood and Lansing, separate memorial services will be held.
Dwayne Netland reports Austin builds civil defense around a Pentagon pledge to shield civilians. Tom O’Brien heads a 3,500-strong program linking Ground Observer Corps and Police Auxiliary with seven key sections including transport, rescue, fire, first aid, housing, and GOC. Mrs. Alfred Norton leads a vigilant 85-person GOC team at the fire station roof, reporting unidentified planes to Minneapolis and Air Force filters, with notable sightings at Austin High School. The program aims to reduce panic and coordinate with Air Force and National Guard for disaster response.
Mary Hughson, chief observer at the Austin Ground Observer Post, fronts a family of volunteers in Civil Defense work spanning England and the United States. She logs about 10 hours weekly, mentors son Terry and son Dean, and coordinates schedules, drills, and Red Cross activities while praising teamwork across emergency services.
The Civil Air Patrol plays a key civil defense role in searches and rescue in Austin. CAP volunteers fly missions with donated planes and time, supporting the Fire Department and St Olaf Hospital, and aiding aviation education at Austin High School. An Austin cadet, Robert Ames, is chosen as a Denmark exchange cadet for a month. The squadron, formed in 1949, now has about 40 officers and 30 cadets with capacity to deploy 100 pilots and 25 planes on short notice.
