Tokyo rumors spread that the Japanese fleet under Vice Admiral Togo and the Russian fleet commanded by Vice Admiral Rozhestvensky have clashed in the Korean Straits amid rising tensions over Korea.
London dispatch reports the Shanghai correspondent of the Daily Express describing Chinese cruisers cleared for action to drive Russians from Shanghai waters. The May 27 London report outlines naval buildup and anticipated hostilities in the Yangtze vicinity.
Cabling from Shanghai reports Chinese authorities demand the Russian Baliye squadron ships around Saddle islands quit within 24 hours.
