Extension of GI Loans Proposed

A three year extension of the GI home loan program was proposed to the Senate as part of an omnibus housing bill amendment. Sen. Lehman with Sen. Hill and Sparkman backed the measure applying to VA loan guarantee and direct loan programs. The bill also targets expanded FHA loan insurance and public housing units amid debate on elderly housing and credit terms.

Grand Jury to Probe Slaying by Step Son

In Minneapolis a Hennepin County Grand Jury will hear evidence Tuesday in a case where 17 year old Thomas N Jacobsen admitted firing eight shots that killed his step mother Leila Jacobsen 57 and wounded grandmother Ida Jacobsen 78. The judge transferred the case to district court as an adult due to violence. Thomas will be 18 in August. His father Owen described Thomas as a good boy despite the tragedy.

Knutson proposes 10 billion student loan program

Rep. Coya Knutson introduces a 10 billion revolving National Student Loan Fund to aid students unable to secure financing. A three member loan board would oversee the fund with $25,000 annual pay, issuing loans covering board room tuition and nominal spending money at 3 percent interest starting after graduation.

Woolson 108th Civil War Vet Stable. Hospitalized in Duluth

In Duluth Minnesota hospital attendants report Albert Woolson age 108 the last Union Army veteran of the Civil War spent a good night and his condition remains unchanged. He was admitted last Friday with lung congestion but is not considered seriously ill and has been able to get about his hospital room.

Man and child die in South Dakota crash near Dell Rapids

A head on collision on a gravel county road 30 miles east of Chester, South Dakota, killed Carl Moon, 49, and a 14 month old child. Several others were injured including Dawes family members and Clifford Brude, with two teenagers and a younger child hospitalized. The deaths push the year toll to 56, two behind last year.
