A Fernie BC coal mine disaster leaves over 100 men either dead or entombed, with eight bodies recovered and rescue efforts ongoing. Authorities cite naked lamps and gas as potential causes while fears grow that few may survive as ventilation improves and dawn approaches. The incident follows long, anxious hours of rescue work amid coal damp and crowded tunnels.
Port au Prince report states Haytien government under a safety committee led by Firmin with 5000 troops and a Haytien man of war at St Marc. The force is said to have withdrawn as representatives move to confer and establish a provisional government.

A May 24 cloudburst flooded Dry Run from Conover to Decorah causing about 100000 in damage. Milwaukee railroad tracks four miles east of Conover were washed out in spots with several bridges swept away making trains unlikely for more than a week.
A severe flood in the Decorah region drives residents from homes and moves fences and small structures. Two deaths occur, including a man and a three year old child swept from a mother's arms. Fire threats and Burlington rail damage compound the disaster as tracks and bridges are rendered unusable for weeks.
May 24 in Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania reports a slow day at the miners strike headquarters. District presidents Nichols Duffy and Fahey met National President Mitchell to discuss the stalemate but offered no new information. Operators meanwhile said Haddock Coal receivers ordered their superintendent to grant union demands to take effect June date.
About 50 men are affected as the workers at the Dodson colliery in Plymouth and the Luzerne colliery go on strike in an inauguation of labor action by this class of employees.
Representative Stevens of Texas introduced a resolution opposing accepting or erecting any statue of a king or sovereign who ruled by divine right. The measure argues such acceptance would repudiate the bill of rights and Constitution and insult revolutionary memories.

Fifty or more United Mine Workers organizers met in Huntington on May 24 with Secretary-Treasurer Wilson and Mother Jones present. They discussed actions in the West Virginia fields and it is believed the sessions forbade a strike.
