Uncertainty about when mass polio inoculations can begin persists as the Public Health Service delays release of Salk vaccine batches for further study. A committee may suggest dosage changes while lawmakers discuss government control of distribution. City clinics report many no-shows amid public confusion.
Washington reports one new confirmed polio case in an individual given Salk vaccine in Arkansas raising the national total to 78. The case is linked to Eli Lilly and Co. vaccine. Cutter and Wyeth products account for most cases. Supplies of Cutter vaccine have been withdrawn.
Dr. Harry Denman of Chicago warned at the Wyoming conference that too many preachers fool with Kiwanis and Lions clubs. He said people in communities go to hell while pastors attend service club meetings.
State police captured Murray Sinak, 28, and rescued June Dallen, 21, four miles north of Monroe after a gunpoint abduction from Detroit. Sinak faced charges for concealed weapon possession while Dallen’s family described threats to marry her. Police traced calls to Bowling Green and pursued the couple toward Toledo. Dallen, a Detroit Conservatory alumna, had been living in Detroit.
Sandra Sloss 13 of Granite City Illinois is the national spelling bee champion at St. Josephs School. She defeated 61 competitors in 541 words the longest total in this event. Jean Copeland took second place. Naomi Klein was third.
New York reports major discounts as General Foods Corp and Standard Brands lower wholesale coffee prices. Maxwell House regular drops four cents to 88 cents per pound, Kaffee Hag and Sanka down five cents per pound, and instant coffee cheaper on two and four ounce jars. Chase & Sanborn from Standard Brands trims four cents and cuts instant varieties by two to four cents depending on size.
More than 5500 acres of woodland burned across New Jersey on Thursday as about 20 wind driven forest fires swept through several sections of the state damaging a wide area including Lakehurst Naval Air Station.

A concerted manhunt was under way in southern Minnesota for three inmates who fled after assaulting deputy Henry Sanders during an attempted transfer. Darrell Lee, Arthur Hirdler, and Ray Lawton escaped by seizing keys. roadblocks covered a wide area as authorities, including the State Crime Bureau, searched Faribault and surrounding regions. Lawton uses alias Dr Raymond Thayer Lawton. The trio were unarmed and the deputy was treated and reported in good condition.
Timothy Studier, 19 months old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Studier, was hospitalized with second degree burns after he fell into a bathtub of hot water in Glenville Minnesota. His mother briefly turned away while preparing his bath.
