Colonel Gaynor and Captain Green escaped U.S. extradition after a writ of habeas corpus was served in Montreal. High Constable Gale and aides arrived by special train with the writ, taking the pair to Montreal jail briefly before leaving with them, while Donald MacMaster and Chief Carpenter also rode the regular train to Quebec. The legality of the arrest determines if return to the United States will proceed. Two carloads of foreigners left the Ha Sleton area for New York bound work and voyage home.
In Philadelphia on May 20 Kid McCoy survived a six round match with Kid Carter at Industrial Hall. McCoy was knocked down five times and saved by the bell in rounds two and three, while Carter delivered heavy blows. McCoy rallied in rounds four through six but remained groggy at the finish as Carter pressed the attack.
Wilkesbarre, May 20. President John Mitchell of the United Mine Workers arrived after 9 PM and set up strike headquarters at Hotel Hart. He was met by local leaders for a brief conference, spent a quiet day in Hazleton with no visitors, and said he had twenty news to give out, noting miners' side developments.
Port au Prince witnesses General Defly and ex war minister M. Wilbrum Guillame leave aboard the Hungaria. Rumors place Firmin’s army near St. Marc as Port au Prince faces a possible approach. If Firmin arrives with troops the city may see fighting and a possible clash with the provisional government.

Winfield Kansas May 20 George W Miller president of the 101 Live Stock Company was arrested charged with the murder of Santa Fe detective George C Montgomery who was shot in his parlor last October. Montgomery was working on a case conflicting with the 101 ranch one of Kansas most extensive operations.
Attorneys for Armour Packing Cudahy Hammond Armour Swift filed a motion in the Missouri supreme court to quash the writ against the meat packers claiming the order was improvidently issued and returnable in vacation. The court will rule when it meets in banc on June 4.
Justice James A. O Gorman was elected grand sachem of the Columbian Order of Tammany Hall in New York on May 20. The vote on the first ballot gave O Gorman eight of twelve, with ex Mayor Robert A. Van Wyck taking four votes. The result was later made unanimous.
A storm resembling a tornado swept west of Modale Iowa on May 20 causing substantial damage to farm property with no loss of life reported.
A May storm 10 miles southeast of Harlan Iowa struck Audubon county causing death and widespread destruction. Andrew Sorrenson died from injuries after his home and farm buildings were ruined. Lewis Hanson Chris Nelsons and Jorgensen families survived by sheltering in cellars as multiple residences barns and a schoolhouse were leveled. The cyclone cellar saved the Hansons while Jorgensen properties suffered extensive damage and trees were torn from the ground. The storm moved on causing further damage before losing intensity.
Detroit May 20 authorities announce a settlement of the wage dispute between the United railway and its conductors and motormen. Conductors and motormen will be paid 23 1/2 cents per hour, an increase of 2 1/2 cents.
Former Corporal Richard O'Brien of North Adams testified to water cure methods used in Igbaras and the execution of bandit Gargamo at Guimal. He described firing at locals, including a boy on a carabao, and the burning death of a woman and two children as officers allegedly faced no rescue options.
The U S Supreme Court granted a writ of certiorari to the Fourth Circuit in the Robert E Downs case over Russia sugar duties. A motion to advance the case was filed with the solicitor general concurring. The brief argues Russia retaliation and U S countervailing duties have harmed trade, and removal could restore friendly relations.

Near Preston Minnesota a cloudburst swept away Michael Wilbright’s family. Three children were recovered alive while Wilbright and his wife remain missing and are believed dead. The incident occurred Sunday as water ruined their home near Preston, Minnesota. la Crosse Wisconsin May 20.
